Where the spacey tunes on Winehouse’s debut gave too much room to fill with Pizza Express-style warblings, this one is tight, packed full of real old-fashioned songs in the manner of soul greats such as Dinah Washington, and Winehouse’s idio- syncratic voice has risen to the occasion gloriously.

It's rare to find any artist changing their approach between albums, and virtually unknown if their debut was a huge success; but for her follow-up to Frank, Winehouse has shifted her emphasis from jazz to soulful R&B. It's a measure of her talents that the shift should be so effective: it has focused her talent on a smaller target, with the result that the impact has been multiplied several times over.

Insane, anorexic and alcoholic – Amy Winehouse has been branded all of them. Maybe the Camden girl’s simply misunderstood? Whatever, her music is exceptional.

Her debut was called "Frank" and it was. So it's anyone's guess why Amy Winehouse's souled-out, Motown-drenched follow-up isn't called "Frankly Foul-Mouthed". Obviously, brilliant records - and frankly, you couldn't call "Back To Black" anything else - aren't built on rudeness alone, whatever Serge Gainsbourg and 2 Live Crew might have hoped.

Why, if you were of a cynical bent, you'd swear it was a publicity stunt. Almost exactly three years after her well received debut Frank, Amy Winehouse suddenly reappears (with a certain other mouthy, press-friendly female singer from London getting the kind of publicity that she could only have dreamed of).

She may be love’s fool, but she certainly ain’t its bitch on one of the year’s finest albums

Winehouse’s Mercury-shortlisted debut ‘Frank’ was a slick little mix of soul, jazz and dancehall, a fine calling card for her full-throated gospel squawk (‘I wanna sound like a big, fat, old black lady’ she told Time Out at the time). But her obsession with R&B authenticity also led her into rather dreary smooth jazz clichés which did little to hook in the punters.

This album caught me by surprise I received it from a friend and was told that it was one of the best albums of 06. Upon listening to the first free traps I was caught up her jazz(y) voice and blunt lyrics. Now I can't seem to take it off my ipod. |

After I heard the song rehab, I was very skeptical that this album would be any good. To my suprise, the rest of the songs are great and i love the album! |

I love it. Her voice is very unique and sultry. The words to the songs are very different, she brings a new meaning to r&b music. I enjoy the music, it has everyone asking me who is that? |

First song I heard was You Know I'm No Good, and her amazing voice is what got me. I have a music subscription and immediately downloaded it to my ZUNE yesterday and I'm still listening to it today. Love it! |

Love love love Amy Winehouse. This album's very different to Frank and is even better. Her voice and feisty yet vulnerably honest lyrics are so unique - there's no one else out there like her. |

Oh Amy Amy. Not to long ago I started listening to her stuff, but i must say: Beautiful songs, choice of words, topics for most of the songs, and VOICE! When her music plays I forget about the disfunctional life she leads. It all is eliminated by the outstanding voice. Two thumbs up for Amy! |

Its amazing that this genre isn't my favourite but i truly love and respect music from it. This is the second album in the R&B/Soul genre that i love each and every song from start to finish. The album titled son "Back to Black" is powerful for anyone who feel they can relate. Truly a masterpiece for anyone with an open mind for music, collection/. |

Amy is the most unique thing to come out in years, i never become so hooked on an album. Frank and Back to Black are quite different but i love that she has gone out on a limb to try something different, and it completely works, Absolutley love her!!! My favourite songs are Take the box and Tears dry on their own, there isnt one song i dislike on wither album! Amy please come to Australia! |

Astonishing album. A 60s soul singer trapped in the body of a North London rock chick. Never before did four-letter words sound so good. |

Best album of the decade for me, this is gritty as hell, yet produced perfectly, I agree with Cadddd below four-letter words have never sounded so good. |

After hearing "Rehab", it got me curious and I listened to the rest of "Back to Black" and the album is sensational. Her vocals are unique and she stands out in the finest way. I adore Amy Winehouse. |

AMAZING truly amazing with all the bad music that is stuck in your face today how refreshing to find Amy! Very unique voice and very original. It's about time that someone who has true talent comes forth to the spotlight rather than the usual crap that plays on the radio |

My favorite song has got to be "Back To Black"... It has this sound to it, as for the rest of the album, that just chills me out and Amy Winehouse's voice is just awesome! It has a unique amazing Old School sound to it that I just love... |

I first heard of Amy Winehouse off of VH1's You Ought to Know series but didn't like her hits they broadcasted but fell in love with her voice. My friend had the album and being curious i looked at the lyrics and I was hooked from then on. |
