Whatever the ultimate culprit, the sum of the album is overshadowed by its parts, which seem more impressive when I consider them each in some sort of isolation. Then again, I won’t be surprised if this all makes more sense to me come next December...

Solace in Sore Hands sounds exactly like another faceless album about distance putting pressure on stretched heartstrings. Gildöf occasionally seems optimistic for his future, but his misery and the circumstances he laments-- war, small towns, traveling careers-- are his preferred muses.

So often music is associated with where it comes from. Thus you get a Liverpudlian beat scene, Oasis and Happy Mondays forever associated with the Manchester sound, and certain periods of Bowie's, Iggy's and Reed's careers can never be mentioned without adding Berlin somewhere along the line.
