Angels and Airwaves may not yet be epic, but they're certainly bounds away from Blink 182 and nearing that legendary status.

Debut album We Don’t Need To Whisper is all about the big songs, taking its cue from the stadium-filler sound of bands like U2 and artists like Peter Gabriel by mixing chiming guitar riffs with electronic flourishes on an epic scale.

Tom DeLonge, the former guitarist-singer of Blink 182, mistakenly takes on the task of becoming a serious songwriter in the mold of Bono and Thom Yorke, casting off fart jokes in favor of artsy-fartsy pretension such as "Valkyrie Missile" and "Start the Machine."

While there's no really bad tracks here, the lack of variety here leaves this rather an indifferent listen.

The problem with We Don't Need to Whisper is not one of ambition; Tom wants to write the Cure's Disintegration and U2's Joshua Tree, but needs a creative foil to keep his songwriting economical. Even on Cheshire Cat, you could hear this musician's ability to write an incredibly tight, no-nonsense post-NOFX pop/punk song, and Tom still can -- he just needs a friend to tell him to tone it down once in awhile.

DeLonge has seemed to become more ambitious in recent years but We Don't Need To Whisper is maybe one baby step too far in the wrong direction.

being an A&A fan i can tell you that this sums up their modern rock sound while still keeping that mellow ribbon that people love |

This album was a big dtep for delonge, and i am suprised that he and A&A did it, everysog was great, though i do admit, it could have been a little better. |

The album does contain some songs that are quite "similar"... I would call it "themed". After a few listens, this album really does become a grower. |
