On this seventh studio set, their maturity is even more evident. The white-boy hip-hop novelty numbers and pop culture references are gone. The jokes are fewer and further between. Sincerity, sadness and sorrow have replaced the irony and wide-eyed optimism.

Despite apparent wit, musicianship and a steady fan base, Barenaked Ladies too often come off as cloying and cute on record.

The Ladies will always be good, but for now, they fall just short of great this time around.

Barenaked Ladies Are Me isn't the worst album the band has ever released, but it certainly doesn't inspire repeated spins, which might be the most damning criticism you could level at these Ladies.

The problem with Barenaked Ladies Are Me is that, well, this doesn’t seem like the Barenaked Ladies at all.

Too many non-Page/Robertson tunes. CD is uneven, but has several very good songs - none great. As a BNL fan I enjoy the CD, but don't think there will be too many converts to the BNL bandwagon. Maybe this was the goal of the project. But hey, see the Ladies when they come to your town on this tour!! They are always entertaining and FUN to see!!! |

I have every album, and after getting used to the new one, it has become perhaps my favorite. What most listeners do not understand is that there was never much optimism in the lyrics: simply in the tunes. If some of the melodies match the complacency and sadness in the lyrics, there is nothing wrong with that. Lyrically and musically, the album is amazing. |

I love this album. I have been a fan since Gordon, and I have been a loyal fan throughout all the releases the Ladies have had - good or bad. I love the mellowness of the lyrics, the smoothness and the maturity of the songs. I have had to let some of their albums grow on me, and some have never (Everything to Everyone)... this one was an instant hit right off from the start. |

This album is decidedly more mellow than their previous releases. Like all their albums, the more you listen, the more you appreciate them. I like that they let Kevin and Jim put their unique mark on this disc. Just saw them for the sixth time in Denver, and as usual, hated to see the show end! |

Overall I thought it was good, althought I wish I could have seen Steve Page's brilliant finger prints on this album more. Nevertheless, songs like 'Bank Job', 'Bull in a China Shop', and 'Maybe your Right' are now on my list of BNL favorites joining Gordon's 'Enid', Stunt's 'I'll be that Girl', Maroon's 'Off the Hook' and many others. Make sure you catch them in concert some time. They are brilliant live and with songs from BLAM to add to their shows I'm sure they will be better than ever. |

It's a different album, that's all. If anything, it's a continuation of the ironic subtlety that BNL abused in Maroon. The songs are pure and totally different. Experiencing them live was quite amazing. If you get past it's simplicity, it's quite nice. |

This is a lot different than their other albums. No song is really great, and there are some songs on this that are actually bad. Something is definitely missing from this CD. If i wasnt already a BNL fan then i probably wouldnt have liked this album. I think I just like it because it's from BNL. I think they can snap out of it but maybe they should only have Page/Robertson songs cuz those are much better. They should have more rock in the songs on this CD. they almost sound like country in this. The last couple years I've been waiting for them to come out with something that will make them popular again because they haven't had a real hit since Pinch Me- you might think Another Postcard was a hit, but it wasn't quite popular enough. So maybe a song from this 1 will get popular. If not then i hope they can come out with something great on their next CD if there is one. |

Mellow, sweet, funny, haunting, clever, I can't say enough great things about this album! I loved Kevin's & Jim's contributions, as well as the continued brilliance of Steven Page and Ed Robertson. BNL can't be shoeboxed as any one type of music or band and it's one of my favorite things about them. I look forward to years of more fantastic music-making. And of course, nothing beats them live - truly an amazing set of consumate entertainers! |
