After what seems like forever Black Strobe release their debut album, Burn Your Own Church. The revered electro pioneers have been with us for a good decade or so, building up a solid fan base with a stream of 7" and 12" single releases. Sounding like Daft Punk's evil, black leather clad twin, the long awaited appearance of this album is sure to set many electro aficionados' hearts racing.

'Burn Your Own Church' - which sees the duo evolve into a proper, four-piece band following the departure of founder member Ivan Smagghe - begins swimmingly, with the title track and teutonic single 'Shining Bright Star' sounding like what might happen if Trent Reznor had lost it to ecstasy rather than coke and megalomania.

Burn Your Own Church is imposing, funny, and intermittently brilliant, but there remains the nagging sense that, as Black Strobe Mk I drift poignantly into the distance and Black Strobe Mk II loom into view in an unsettlingly phallic manner, some of the best bits might have gotten lost in the transition.

Too often, dance music isn't taken seriously unless it in some way resembles rock. But that doesn't mean cross-pollination is necessarily good for it, and Black Strobe's Burn Down Your Own Church is a prime example why. This French quartet, which has been putting out singles for a decade but is only now getting around to making a full album, marries palm-muted riffs and guttural, take-me-seriously vocals with zooming acid synths and ravey ambience.
