This album has showed so much improvement in this band and I would suggest buying this one even if you are not a fan of their previous work.

Musically, this album is pretty much spot-on. The drums provide such an amazing backbone, rolling through songs like "Archers" and providing great backdrops for the softer parts of songs, like "Degausser." The guitars are, again, spectacular. The production choice to really drive them home was a good one, and even on the instrumental "Welcome to Bangkok" they hold their own against the lack of vocals.

It’s incredible listening to Brand New’s The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me, how soothing, how bitter, how generally atmospheric it is. Then a realization even more amazing occurs to you—this is only their third album.

Continuing their evolution from the pop-punk upstarts of their youth, these dozen tracks are markedly the work of older, wiser and more disciplined songwriters. While their emo brethren continue to flail around having hissy fits, these tracks find frontman Jesse Lacey and co. take a more restrained and contemplative path. And a surprising one -- musically, they import a few moves from the moody foreign lands of indie-rock and goth.

On its major-label debut, this Long Island quartet keeps up the mildly nuanced emo sound trotted out on 2003's pretty good Deja Entendu: There's an eerie choir ("Degausser"), a power-pop facsimile ("Archers") and a ballad suaver and sexier than most emo slow jams ("Jesus Christ").

After releasing emo's finest moment, Déjà Entendu, in 2003, Brand New retreated into self-imposed silence. Now they're back: unblemished by the slow death of the scene they gave grace to, the New Yorkers are still juggling raw, unremitting rock and dense prog, still softening their powerful punch with enough pop melodies and catchy hooks to satisfy a Snow Patrol fan.

I havent heard your favorite weapon, and i bought deja entenduthe year it came out because my brother told me to, and i was like 13 or 12. it sat in my cd case for a year and a half, because i thought i was 'punk' and wouldnt let 'emo' enter my earspace, but i eventually gave up on picking genre titles for stuff, and realized that i loved the cd. The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me is, in my opinion, perfect for anyone who sees the musical genious in brand new the way i see it: as music. not as emo, not as pop, or what have you. Music. Good Music. |

It has many more religous references then I am used to seeing from them, but it is hard to determaine whether its just cynical sarcasm, or perhaps real beliefs. Other then that, the music is fantastic (of course, everything they touch is golden) |

it's different. it couldn't really be compared to their earlier albums just because it's so different. but in itself, it's well done and very easy to listen to. although if you're looking for something a little heavier, look to their older songs. |

I am and always have been a fan of brand new. at first i thought this album was a little to bizzarre but after a few listens, i was amazed at jsut how great this album really is. to anyone who thinks they dont like it, try listening to it a few times through and you will see what i mean. brand new is an extremely talented band and theyve been working on this album for 3 years, so they wouldnt just throw a crap album out there. now, theyre third album has posibly become my new favorite. |

I have always been a huge brand new fan. So of coarse I got the new cd the first day it came out. At first i was a bit disappointed, it wasnt what i was expecting from them. But after listening to it for a few days I like it a lot. Im still not feeling the lyrics as much as the deja. They really suprised me on how emo they got. But its really good overall |

This album is waaay different as im sure youve heard by now. To tie this album to any genre does it an injustice. The songs themselves are about as good as they get. The flow of the album could be a bit better if bolstered by one or two harder songs. |

This album is sheer brillance. The first time I heard it I didn't really know what to think, but after listening to the lyrics and appreciating it for what it is, and not comparing it to previous records I grew to like it.
Brand New had a lot to live up to & I strongly believe they managed to prove themselves once again.

Best album i have evr heard, the music is purely amazing, and as always jesse uses his voice to communicate emotion like no other singer out there, and to top it all off, if written in a different time, you could be reading some of these lyrics as poetry in an english class, simply amazing |

this album is a work of art, simply put. This is the best album from them by far, talent wise, and possibly lyric wise. their structure is better, the cd flows almost without any imperfections. i've been a Brand New fan since day one, and I'm not dissapointed. I'm actually amazed at how they've matured. the bass and drums are almost flawless, and the voice resonates a raw emotion that is hard to come by.
for those of you who are just looking for an "emo" cd. DO NOT get this. There is no label that can be put on this. it's just an amazing work of art. |

I was slightly dissapointed on the first listen of the album, But being otherwise engaged while I was listening didn't help. To me the songs don't have as many memorable quirks as the previous albums. Although "Sowing Season" and "Millstone" are some of the best Brand New I've heard. |

to me... this cd was pretty impressive. the music work is very emotional and jesse's "whine" (if you may) adds to the feeling. the lyrics were good but not as intricate as deja entendu's was. otherwise... incredible. the feel is differing from their previous work. and i'm diggin' it |

I baught both "Deja Intendu" and "Your Favorite Weapon" and i fell in love with brand new right away. Being so used to the old brand new i was thrown off by "The Devil and God..." but i didnt give it up. If your used to the old brand new, give this one time, it will grow on you, i promise. This Cd is amazing. Well done, well done. |

I find it hard to believe that the biggest argument against this album is that its "emo". What it's emotional? i think thats it's ace in the hole. Passion and Feeling is what this album and what music is about. Brand New delivers what alot of other bands claim to, these guys are about music. I dont understand why people would want to listen to music thats without. |

Hated most of it the first time, then I listened to it again, and I love it. Its my fav from them by far. I can't stop listening to it. Its like they gave themselves a randiohead-type makeover. Even if you hated Brand New, get this album because it is so chill. |

I think maybe it will grow on me like the rest of their stuff, somehow i always get past how bad they sing because they have a really good sound. Loved the last 2 cd's, hopin this one isnt as bad as it initially seems. |

It's a very good album and I really like it. I do not belive that this album can be compared to Deja or even YFW but this album is really good. |

Rating: 10.0 |
To really respect this CD you have to understand that when YFW was written the band was immature and young, the whole CD was about broken hearts and revenge. Even with Deja Entendu they were still a maturing band, they were maturing then with songs like Guernica and Play Crack the Sky. This is their evolving sound. You can still hear bits and pieces of the sound that they once were, like in You Wont Know you can hear the old Jesse in there screaming. You just have to realize that you can't keep the same sound forever. If you dont change sounds all of your music sounds the same and eventually leads to the death of your band. You have to coninually look for new ways to get your sound out. This is by far the best CD Brand New has released, and it was well worth the wait. |

BN's first Cd, Your Favorite Weapon, was very hard, almost verging on punk. It was awe-inspiring. Their second Cd, Deja Entendu, was a bit softer, a smooth blend of pop-rock with a twist of emo. As with YFW, DE was lyrics put together with a powerful voice, and Jesse Lacey's voice was enough to send chills down your spine. Now, with The Devil and God are raging inside me, another beautiful Cd, they have slowed the music down a bit, but they still manage to hit very hard with the guitars and drums at spots in every song. The lyrics are absolutely amazing. |

Rating: 3.0 |
I've got to say that the overall recording quality isn't anything to brag about. When I was looking at the CD artwork, I saw that some songs were recorded in a place called "Mikes Basement"... Yeah, I understand what that means now. It was recorded in a basement or a broom closet or something. Often times, its difficult to hear the vocals, because whoever mixed the CD figured it would be a good idea to add a large amount of reverb to birtually every instrument on each track.
This CD could have been better, but I think that calling it a great CD is just grasping at straws. The lyrics are good, but more obscure than their first two cds.
This CD lacks the punch and emotion that the choruses in their first two CDs carried, so theres no real "sing along" moment on this CD, which was the ENTIRE REASON I listened to this band in the first place. I honestly cannot see a live show being any good if this music is to be played.
It seems to me like this band has become artistic simply for the sake of being artistic and for nothing but that. |

You cannot listen to this CD expecting Your Favourite Weapon or Deja Entendu. It's completely different. Completely amazing. The band has obviously spent the last three years growing and maturing. They have produced something raw, and what some would consider pure. It is up there with the best. It something you can enjoy, something you can listen to without screaming 'sell out', which seems to be the trend these days. |

This cd is great. I heard the songs for the first time at one of the shows and they sounded better then the old stuff. You can tell that Brand New has matured musicly and somehow the impact of the lyrics is even better then the first two cds. Its not a better cd then Deja, but to expect them to top that is just not realistic. Buy the cd, its good. |

It is good stuff. I loved their first cd it was upbeat and you could scream every word right along with them in your car. I kind of shunned the second cd for a good year because it wasn't the upbeat brand new I had previously knew. Finally I sat down and really listened and really enjoyed. My first reaction to this cd was that they had moved even futher to the "emo" side of the spectrum with "The Devil..." but once i really got to listening it is a great cd not just musically but lyrically even more so. |

It's not really anything like their other two albums; which isn't a bad thing. What I liked about the songs off their other albums was their pure catchyness. What I like about the songs on this new album is that they're emo, but they don't make me want to go kill myself. They still have that nice melodic aspect to their stuff. Overall, I think it's a really good album, but incomparable to their other stuff because it's so different. Whether the new Brand New is better than the old one is up to the listener... |

This album shows just how much Brand New's sound has really changed. It shows that they have grown up, along with their sound. This sounds very different from their other two albums, not in a bad or good way, just different. I love the new stuff just as much as the old. And I can't wait for the next album to come along.
May I also say that I recently saw them live and thought they were absolutely amazing. Though this is a matter of opinion. I heard a couple people say the new stuff just wasn't good live. But then others will say it is quite amazing. It all depends on your opinion |

I think townshiprebellion is being rebellious for the sake of being rebellious. If you can't feel, read or hear the honesty in this album I would seek a psychological evaluation. I also don't understand all of the references to their first two albums, how everyone was somewhat disappointed it didn't sound the same. Well, would you buy a second copy of Deja Entendu if you already owned it? It's not just with this album, but it seems with music as a whole, people expect artists to duplicate what they have already done... how boring!!!!! It shows diversity, skill and real talent to be able to write such different sounding music and still have it sound great. Most bands cannot achieve such musical success. They beat the same sound to death until you don't buy it anymore. The great thing about this album is that although all of the songs seem to carry the same kind of theme and feeling, each song has been given it's own identity. Each song is somewhat unique and stands out in it's own regard from the other songs on the album. I don't think there is much confusion is distinguishing one song from the other. (I believe that is quite a compliment and feat for popular music of our era.) The devil and god are raging inside me, deals with much deeper and meaningful subjects about life and death than many other major label bands dare to even think about, or if they are even capable of that kind of understanding. And to say this album lacks punch? This has to be one of the most dynamic (if you even know what that means in refering to basic music theory, 'township') rock cds I have ever heard.
I could go on and on, but I seriously doubt brand new is trying to be artistic just for the sake of it, but even so, I think that, 'being artistic' for the sake of 'being artistic,' is a pretty good reason to be 'artistic,' especially for an 'ARTIST'...which is a much better reason than MERE PROFIT!
(...and I plead that we stop using so many labels! like 'emo' and 'punk' and whatever... labels restrict, confine and limit... brand new's music is simply that, their music. I don't even understand the label 'emo,' of course I know what it means and that's why... because, what is any music without some kind of emotion? It's the reason for it's existance, to create a certain kind of mood or feeling...which deals with our 'emotions'... trying to label a music genre as 'emo' has got to be one of the most mindless things I have ever heard). |

In response to Jessica's comment above, Brand New's religious references are probably not sarcastic because when I saw Brand New last night, I noticed Jesse Lacey had a huge picture of Jesus on the back of his guitar during one point when he held it up. Brand New's recent release is definitely not what I was expecting, but it is pretty good nonetheless. However, I favor Deja Entendu and Your Favorite Weapon. I would say that Not the Sun and The Archer's Bow is Broken are two of the best songs on the new CD. If you are used to their old music, it might take a while to adjust to The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me but it would be worthwhile to give it a try. |

Gimme back the old Brand New. I feel like their new album is very cluttered with instruments & not as lyrical driven as I would like out of them. I do have to say though that I love the "Jesus" song.
I really do prefer their old albums though. |

TownshipRebellion clearly knows nothing about music. Dont listen to him/her. Chances are with this album, if you favoured 'Your Favourite Weapon' you're going to find this too obscure and mature, though if you appreciated the moody refined tones of 'Deja Entendu' you will grow into 'The Devil..' Of course its not like the other two. Would you want them to bring out the same thing again? No. Thats not what they're about. Hence the names Brand New, and Deja Entendu - loosely translated to 'heard before'. Its called irony. Anyway, its a mature and complex sound that most Brand New fans will appreciate. |

Personally, I think that this is one of the best albums to have come out in a very long time. The fact that the lyrics are relatable too and the music is very well performed. I see everyone is saying that it isnt like their other albums. Please, grow up like they did. Not every album has to have a popiness to it. This album is very raw and makes you think. |

amazing cd. its reeeally deep tho. definately not based on teen angst like the first two, its waay darker... when i saw Brand New in concert right before this album came out, Jesse seemed pretty sad. or tired. i dunno, but anyways, they are so talented and original.. i love it! (i hear the album title comes from a convo jesse had with a friend of his that was suffering from schitzophrenia) i hope they release another one. 3 is not enough.

this might just be the best album I have ever heard. the thing which has always seperated brand new from most bands to me, is the lyrics, and Jesse has only gotten better. this might just be the most amazing album I have bought, and will ever buy. This album is the reason music is made. This has to be the best album I have heard in years. Brand New has grown immensely since "Deja Entendu." This is definitly my favorite album from Brand New.To be honest with each album they have shown some growth and maturity, with Your Favorite Weapon being such a starter album and deja entendu being being the great album that it is this one is totally different from the two others and to be honest they all are a lot different from eachother. This album is pretty much my favorite even though it is a lot deeper and the sound is a lot different i think it just shows how much this band has grown. Its about time that bands realize it doesnt matter if you are emo or scene the point is to make great music and thats what Brand New has done. They have forgotten about being known as the emo band and has just moved on to something more brilliant than the album before it. |

i think this abulm is one of the best abulm of the year they mature and the song got more emo the lyrics actually have a meaning and a saying and not just typical girl problems i love how it debates religion and life and the music is very acoustic and dark like limousine which was my favorite song its a sad song but the way the put it in the mother prospective of her daughter dying is freakin crazy but to sum it up its a great cd |

I don't like how Rolling Stones rated this Cd. I think that Brand New has come along way to where they are now, and improved so much that their completely amazing. i can say that there is a couple of songs that i don't like "Welcome To Bangkok" and "Untitled" but their still worth listening to. Jesus Christ gives this Cd so much meaning and it justs hits like "wow this a really awesome song" using their unique style and riffs, and with Lacey's magnificant voice adds so much emotion to the whole Cd. Where this Cd makes you want to listen to it over and over again. But there is some good songs on this Cd, my personal favorites are "Sowing Season" which gets you ready for whats coming next on the Cd, "Jesus Christ" which i really didn't think i would like, but ended up loving "Because of lines like "I'm not scared to die, I'm a little bit scared of what comes after" which is awesome line. But really altogether i love the Cd, in fact I'm listening to it now. It Truely is a Master Piece. |

I was not a Brand New fan before buying this album. Deja Entendu wasn't really my cup of tea for the most part and the only song I really liked from them was Jude Law and a Semester Abroad. Well, this album certainly changed that for me.
I initially bought it for three really weak reasons: 1.I heard Sowing Season and actually liked it. 2.I thought the cover art was amazing. 3.The hype surrounding it made me curious.
Luckily, I wasn't disapointed at all in this album. The only part about The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me that really sort of bothers me is the chorus of Degausser. I don't like it. The rest is beautiful. Archers has to be my favorite song. This CD hasn't left my prescence in a week, meaning that it has currently de-throned my favorite album; I Am The Movie. Any CD that can tear me away from I Am The Movie is worth a try. |

i have to say im quite shocked that some people didnt quite appreciate this album. i guess they were depending too much on the past. brand new has always had the power to capture you with their sound and their lyrics, and i dont find this CD to lack that. true, it does have a different sound, but hey, they've been doing alot since deja. dont go into this thinking that its "emo" or giving it some stereotype, or expecting it to have the same sound. just go in ready to have your mind blown. it won't disappoint you. |

I'm not a big fan of the emo thing. I was used to a world full of Nirvana, Radiohead, Tool, three bands that owned the 1990's. Funny thing is, I didn't listen to music much until 2000. Deja Entendu through me into that different 'rock genre,' but only briefly. Brand New's recent album features a mixture of sounds that any fan of music would enjoy because of the raw sounds installed into each of the twelve tracks. They didn't repeat their style from Deja Entendu, which makes this album (and the band itself) an even bigger success. Bands are supposed to continuously reinvent oneself, and in this case, Brand New was very much a success. |

When I first heard this album I thought the same as I thought when I heard deja entendu, and that was "its not as good as their last album". Mostly because its a very different sound, but just like deja entendu, this album has really grown on me after hearing it through a few times. Your favourite weapon remains my first choice of the three, but still a very good album showing a lot of potential for a fantastic fourth album. |

I would give it a big fat nine considering there previous albums( which i still think are great also). The greatness of this album is the so much improved sound en the sick songwriting by jessie, which defenitly show how much the've grown. Above all defenitly there best piece of work! |

This a one of the best cd I have ever heard both lyrically and instrumentally as well. It is hard to compare it to deja entendu right now but in time I believe you will come around on it. To those of you who hate it don't worry one day you will mature and then you will love it like the people who know what good music sounds like. |

Like many others, when I first baught this album, I wasn't sure what I thought about it. Shortly after I gave it a long time to replay in my head, and looking up the lyrics I can say this cd is a master peice. Jesse's struggle with religion have driven him to write his most poetic and deep lyrics ever. This cd requires your full attention, and once yuo give it that, you will never want to turn it off. |

Hey, if this music is so "mature" and all... why the hell are you listening to it? You assholes have turned this into a freaking venue to make a mockery of my opinion on the new CD. I have my opinion, and you have yours.
Dear Mr. "TownshipRebellion is Retarded"... Put a freaking gun in your mouth and pull the trigger.... I suppose if you consider yourself worthy of listening to music that is so mature and intelligent, yet you still sit there at your computer mocking people half a country away because you disagree with their musical tastes, you're so disillusioned that that gun barrel is the only way to solve your problem. |

This cd is quite a step up musically. Their old stuff is real sweet, and the new stuff is...well..."brand new". Pretty much they just became a different band without changing the name. Good for them. P.S: Let's talk about music, leave the pre-pubescent drama out of it. |

To all the people that say that this album is nothing like the other 2. Umm, yea thats the point. How many albums do you expect to get released that sound alike? This album has everything, awesome lyrics, great instrumentals, and a lot of emotion. To the person that said that they can't see a good live show from this album...i saw them live and the show freakin rocked!!! Awesome album. |

This cd, beyond being essentially a flawless piece of musical genious, forces us to look within. What will happen when we die, were is our hope and faith? "I know you'll come in the night like a thief..." We have God's word, don't live in fear. |

so im still in the verge with this albumn i saw it in the store and bought it imediatly without giving it a listen. I was wrong the first time i heard it i was so dissapointed in wasting my money on this cd, i thought it was going to be melodic and catchy but its slow and dragging like a bad acustic sound.
hearing from all og your comments maybe i should give it a second listen because while i was in the car listening to it i hated it with a passion i wanted my money back :[

"The Devil and God"is probably one of my favorite albums right now. THIS album got me hooked on them, so essentially I worked my way backwards with their music. I know this might not make me a 'true' fan, but I'm a fan nonetheless. What I'd like to point out is the fact that they're HOOKING people, new people, with their new album, and that's fantastic. People like me who got into this new stuff and looked up their old stuff and became just as fanatic about THAT as well! Their diversity stuns me! I love all their albums now, and I think that if you like them as a band you should support them and not be afraid of change. =D it's great music...ALL of it (even if I am a little biased toward The Devil and God)! Degausser was the first song that hooked me! I love their drums and their harmonies are great. |

I love the newest album its definitly a hard left from Deja Entendu. They kept there melody and rythm but gave it a darker twist than the pervious albums. To make three albums with three different sounds but melodicly the same is a beautiful thing. Keep on going Brand New, you guys are what real musicians are. As for Rollingstones critics, your a bunch of hip-hoppers and rappers, and rap is destroying the youth.......ListentoBrandNew. |

I love this band and all of the music that they write. Both lyrically and instrumentally, in my mind, they're amazing. The things they write about are so relative and yet never casual or too much like another band. They have an amazing way with words and definitely don't lack the talent to play their instruments and it shows with pieces like Welcome to Bangkok. They truly have matured and whether you like this newest album or not, you need to admit that. Their words are just as powerful if not more than their previous lyrics and as I have already stated, as instrumentalists they defy the limit built up by the genre they've been categorized under.
And, if you've read this review, thank you. I hope you enjoy the album, for it truly is worth listening to.

I was utterly shocked by this album and Brand New's amazing ability to reinvent themselves successfully. I at first was unhappy with it because Deja Entandu came to me at the right time in my life and this album didn't speak to me when i got it. The more and more I listen to this album, the more it sends chills down my spine at the parallels of the music to my life. That is definately the mark of a great artist. Their musical and lyrical ability is unparalleled. I throughly enjoy this album and recgonmed that you go out and buy it! |

I think this is a really good album. It's not really like the first two. I expected something like the first two. But it's still really good. Making new material is hard to do. You have to be creative to still keep up with new ideas. But BRAND NEW pulled it off, and deserve the appreaciation for working hard on this. So thanks to Brand New for making another amazing album:]and i hope they keep making more music for everyone to enjoy. <33 |

This album is NOTHING like YourFavouriteWeapon. and it's nothing like DejaEntendu. It's proof that Brand New can evolve, unlike some bands. &that they can do it with style; sexy, bitter and sly. It's chilling - Jesse Lacey's voice is heartbreaking. |

I've been a fan of Brand New for awhile and I must say despite the changed sound this album has turned out to be more than decent. I suppose it's really a love/hate thing. If you're stuck on their old sound, then don't expect to get as much out of this as you would hope. Nevertheless excellent sound as usual, after the first listen the deeper lyrics and more mature feel won over me. I didn't really expect anything else of course, this is Brand New. Oh, and people really need to get off eachothers backs. If you want to hold some petty argument find somewhere else to do it, and save the wasted space here. |

I'm seeing these boys next week and I just hope to God they don't play a lot of songs from this album. Don't get me wrong-- it's an amazing CD of music, but like someone had stated earlier, there are no real sing-along moments in it. That's what bothers me because one of my favorite parts about concerts is that you can sing along with them.
I will not compare this CD to Deja or YFW, but I'll just look at it as another beautiful work from Brand New. |

I have all there albums, I love their work. This new album is in my opinion the best album so far this year. I believe Brand New are evolving very well from their first album to now. When I got this album I listened to it all the way through and stuck with the album and every time I hear it I like it more. Great work on this album, only downside is u get no lyrics to look at but you can send $1.00 and they will send them to you, so I guess that works. This is a must buy album! My favorite 3 songs are "Millstone","Jesus/Jesus Christ", and "The Archer's Bows are Broken"(I would buy album just for them songs alone!). |

I will not go on a huge tirade, but this album truly does not stack up in the genre that it aspires to compete in. It may have lyrical and emotional depth and yada yada yada, but the truth of the matter is it is an exercise in pretension. Brand New are not extremely talented musicians nor have they ever been. The instruments are sloppy, the vocals are yelpy, and the production is simply awful. They threw this album together and it shows. |

This is probably the best cd I have ever listened to. The lyrics are brilliant. The band has grown from album to album & this definitly shows it. I don't know what that Darren guy above me is talking about, I think he's pmsing or something =] |

When I first bought this cd I was little bummed because I was expecting something close to Deja but after listening to it a couple times completely through it really stuck to me. Jesse's voice is amazing. Him alone singing makes me happy. His lyrics are the most amazing thing ever. He knows how to explain himself. Brand New deserves much more recognition for this cd than what they have been getting. This cd is amazing! |

I'm surprised by some of the poor scores people give this CD and then go on to say "it's not what i'm used to from Brand New." The whole CD was written this way due to the band's constant exposure to funerals and deaths during the writing process. Really there is a whole other CD made between Deja and Devil and God that people have loosely labeled fight off your demons demos. The 3rd cd would've sounded more like that, but when you are being constantly exposed to such influential things as funerals it's hard not to write about it.
It's also rediculous how people are saying this CD is softer then the first two... did you even listen to this CD? Jesus is soft... Luca is soft... Handcuffs is soft... and I guess untitled is soft too. That's 4/12 and the rest is much harder music. Deja had a lot more softer music and YFW was basically all hard. I've been listening to Brand New as I've been growing up and really each CD has come at the right time as to the theme of my life at the moment.
This CD isn't perfect, but it's really close. I think when the 4th comes in some years everyone who already doesn't have their eyes and ears on Brand New will be glued onto Jesse and the gang.
This CD is tremendous. The transitions from one to the other are so intricatly intwined it's just breath taking. The meanings behind the songs and the titles are at times insane and shocking and will make the songs mean so much more if you know what they are about. Lyrics are second to none. If I could write like Jesse I think I'd be famous too :) Vocals, guitars, bass, and drums flow like a river and then when you hear something like Welcome to Bangkok it's like a boulder is thrown into that river to give you a wake up call.
Buy this, then buy Deja, then get YFW. If you don't think Brand New is the best band alive yet, then you will soon enough. |

I have enjoyed watching this band grow up along side myself. The first album came out when I was eleven, and I was able to understand the lyrics and their subject matter (not too difficult, I must say). The musicality was also age appropriate. At the age of thirteen, I was able to understand the slightly more complex insight offered in the lyrics of Deja Entandu and the music itself appealed to the true raw emotion I was begining to feel. Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me finds me at a place in my life where I am attempting to strike the delicate balance between raw emotion and intellect and at the same time questioning intently things that have always seemed second nature such as relationships, religion, and politics. I found the lyrics to be extremely thought provoking and well written overall, exemplifying that balance, as well. The unique cadence to the vocals; the comlexity offered by the strings on "Handcuffs", the accoustic picking on "Luca", and bass lines on all tracks; the use of dynmics by the entire group; and the power of the guitar and precussion exemplify just how far the musicianship of each member has come. I can't wait to see what's next for these guys! |

For someone who A)always loved Brand New and B) wasn't real big on the musical side of listening to albums, The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Of Me is a slap in my face. Every single song is something special, and something to cherish. There are no throw away tracks, even the lyrically inept tracks are just awesome. I've listened to this album over a thousand times at least and i still find something new that surprises me. the low growls, the low background wails, it's all good. Nothing like their previous work, which is perfectly fine for me. i want pop? i got Your Favorite Weapon, quiet / loud "emo" i have Deja Entendu, if i was a piece of perfection, i have "The Devil And God". |
