Volta is filled with the dual disembowelings of our place in time—the explosions and the dissections both.

An exuberant charge in the general direction of the mainstream. This is still enjoyably strange music — Timbaland co-produces three tracks, but the twitching martial beats that he provides for songs such as Earth Intruders and Innocence would probably terrify his regular clients such as Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado.

Björk’s origins might well be lost in the mists of time, but we’re not as concerned as she is: we’re far more interested in where she’s headed, even at this point of her career. This is no sidestep, despite the recalling of past achievements; it takes one step back to fly a dozen forward, and leaves the listener bewildered at its incredible execution.

The perfect balance between the vibrancy of her poppier work in the '90s and her experiments in the 2000s.

Bjork's fluid and always changing, but only outwardly. Under it all, she's still the same charming eccentric that led The Sugarcubes -- a playful sprite, but a sprite with the ability to challenge.

It's an unavoidable truth that the 1990s are long gone and disco revisionism isn't exactly the premier vehicle for fun these days. What works on Volta will probably endure as long as what (little) worked on Medúlla, so expectations should probably be recalibrated. It could simply be that we were all expecting the wrong thing in hoping for the little princess to resuscitate her 808.

A pretty good argument for Bjork to keep doing whatever she pleases -- not that she ever wouldn't.

Even with a little help from A-list percussion pals, Björk's Volta can't find its groove.

Only Bjork sings like Bjork, only Bjork so brilliantly composes and dares to go beyond the obviousness. She's a genius, and I guess that's why she terrifies those who have no idea about what Art is. |
