It's less frantic, less reliant on Kele Okereke's bark, and more layered and lush than its predecessor, so it mostly seems to go down easy. Get involved a little more intimately, though, and the album reveals an insidiously dark power: It's smart, strange, just different enough from its predecessor, and, eventually, absolutely stunning.

A Weekend in the City is a deeper, darker, more powerful, more developed and an all-around better record than Silent Alarm.

Homosexual relationships. Cocaine. War. Terror. Religious intolerance. Racial hatred. The monotonous ennui of a Monday morning commute to a job you hate in a world that seems like it's let you down. As second albums go, it's hardly "Ruby, Ruby, Ruby / Wooooah oohhhhh".

It’s dirty, dishevelled, unsure and paranoid; fearful, easily distracted, boisterous and ashamed; reckless, wild, nervous and terrified; graceful, thought-provoking, clumsy and contradictory. And it’s very nearly perfect.

Overall, the production is superb, the arrangements staggering, the only downside appears to be the melodically cyclical offerings by the four piece's frontman. It won't wallop you about the face and challenge you regarding the price of gas, but it will hold your hand and tell you some stirring stories.

It's a good album, it's just not for everybody. It's ironic, though, considering how universal their scope is.

Bloc Party finds the balance between the post-punk and progress that eluded art-punk alchemists, post-punk practitioners and dance-punk dabblers for years. Now that it's achieved the impossible, it's time to revel in its glory. Pop A Weekend in the City into your stereo and crank it loud enough for your neighbors to enjoy this miracle of musical evolution.

Like any great album it dashes through a kaleidoscope of emotions, whilst still producing a handful of tracks that are hideously catchy and something for the kids to dance to.

For the most part A Weekend In The City is a terrific listen – an album that looks more than capable of surpassing the success of acclaimed debut album Silent Alarm thanks to a fuller, more coherent sound.

Bloc Party perfects the art of allowing their disc to evolve from one outlook to another naturally they so nearly mastered on Silent Alarm. The album impeccably marches from beginning to end with marked confidence in its pace.

An absolutely dreadful second album: pompous, preachy, overreaching, and still dull.

Too often, the music on A Weekend in the City is less memorable than the ambitious subject matter. Still, drummer Matt Tong pumps out herculean disco-rock beats that'll work any nightclub into a froth.

A Weekend In The City is a very different beast to the London quartet's million-selling debut.

Bloc Party's second album begins like an episode of Panorama, full of frowning portent and ambition to say something about The State of Britain Today. Unfortunately, grand statements are not earnest frontman Kele Okereke's forte. Powered by tirelessly inventive drummer Matt Tong, Bloc Party are maturing into a great art-rock band, moving from clobbering crunk-influenced beats (The Prayer) to tender techno ballads (On).

Even Silent Alarm Remixed (2005) sounds more organic in places.

It’s a difficult album to love, or even like. But, for all its faults — and there are many — there is enough here to make one think that maybe, just maybe, Bloc Party are capable of making, with their third LP, the kind of challenging yet highly accessible pop album they think they’ve made here.

Rarely in recent years has the curse of the Difficult Second Album struck quite as devastatingly as it does here, wiping away the promise borne by Bloc Party's Silent Alarm.

Some of the songs need better chourus', on some songs they are dull and boring. It seems no different from the regular lyrics. Some songs could use a little more upbeat tempo. The album seems to lose energy as it goes on. |

Many people would say that this album is dark and depressing. However if you take the time to listen to the tracks then you can discover the hidden meanings of th tracks which i have to say are amazing. Altough there are songs that i feel are poor and not a full effort there are more than enough great songs to make this a great album. Top tracks : Songs For Clay - an awesome opener I still remember Sunday Kreuzberg Hunting for Witches Waiting for the 7.18 |

Great album I think. It follows good flow from the beginning to the end, starting off fast and strong to a nice melodic finish. Really good lyrics as well. |

not impressed with the lyrics at all- they seem uncoordinated and unpoetic. i feel like the band lost a bit of their edge in this album. loved silent alarm, disappointed with a weekend in the city. hopefully it'll grow on me, but i'm betting i won't ever like it as much as silent. |

shimmers with a dark, tainted side, it's easy to fall in love with this record. bloc party really know how to put together a good tune, and the sounds break my heart every time. the lyrics are extremely literate and meloncolly, just as good as its predecessor, just less frantic. bloc party: i love you. well worth the wait |

This album is amazing. Bloc Party has done it again, the lyrics and beats are amazing. Ive been listening to this album for 3 weeks straight and i think its still one of the best albums of the year. A great album, though it has its depressing points they really add to the greatness of the album. Truly amazing. |

Two years after the delightful debut 'Silent Alarm', the bloc are back with a darker and deeper 'A Weekend In The City'. Dealing with everyday modern life issuses, the bloc machine continues to give out monster tunes, from the cracking 'Hunting For Witches' to the late stormer 'Uniform' and the tender 'I Still Remember'. It's a grower and might sound disappointing at first, but believe me, it will be big. A fitting sequel! |

A really good album who likes Bloc Party for their lyrics, not their music. I can understand why alot of people dont like it, because of Silent Alarms very energetic start to the band, however Weekend In the City still has some great beats. As Bloc Party said themselves, this album was supposed to be more centered around lyrics than music. |

This is my first time to hear Bloc Party. I agree this album is not so powerful but it's still sounds appeal. The flowing of the tracks is smooth, and the lyrics are with deep meanings. "Waiting For The 7:18", "Kreuzberg" and "Sunday" is the best among them in my opinion. However, there're still some poor songs I think. It's quite strange that it has a good opening and ending but with a quite boring middle part. |
