Robbers & Cowards is one of those records that will be revered or shat upon, but begs not to be ignored. May its greatness not be lost on the general public reach more deeply into hearts than heads.

Cold War Kids are a young band playing it loose, a modern day Creedence Clearwater Revival. Gnawing at the roots of rock, they are tattered and talented, and the propaganda is justified. Robbers & Cowards could have benefited from some tactful editing but is still a wallop of a debut.

All in all, Robbers and Cowards, reminds me most of that first night I saw the band. The album stops short of revelation, but still comes across as the work of a band whose name you should know. It’s a good debut, maybe even a very good one. Whether or not this band will achieve greatness remains anybody’s guess.

Robbers & Cowards features considerable rock 'n' roll release, but little of the joy associated with it, and Cold War Kids work that tension for all it's worth. In that, the group owes a lot to some of the same post-punk sources that have been all over this decade's music, but their earthy passion can't be faked.

It's an enjoyable record for sure, and the Cold War Kids are, like I said earlier, pretty good.

It's a polished (if backward-looking) pastiche, cleaner and annoyingly louder on the album than on the three previous EPs.

Ok. So Im not sure where I heard of this band. I think it might have been the Rolling Stoen Top 100 songs of the year. Anyway, I heard "We Used To Vacation" and fell in love with this band. The lead singer's amazing voice just totally killed me. I got the album and listened to it non-stop for like two weeks. Ah-may-zing!.. |
