I was first exposed to the unique talents of Damien Rice in October 2002. He was supporting Kathryn Williams at London's Old Vic and it was one of those rare occasions when within minutes of starting you knew you were listening to something special.   Full text...

"O" fans will appreciate the sweet simplicity of "Dogs", while the Nick Cave-like "Accidental Babies" is a grimly intimate exploration of jealousy.   Full text...

Entertainment Weekly Rating: 7.5

Rice's 9 offers more of the same: the warm rub of his slightly weathered voice over spare piano and guitar accompaniment, melodies that build to stately crescendos, and lots of self-absorbed romantic angst.  Full text...

AV Club Rating: 7.5

He rocks more often and more bombastically, but he still writes few song-songs of the kind that anyone with a guitar could stand on stage and interpret.  Full text...

Slant Magazine Rating: 7.0

Here, Hannigan's voice also serves as comforting assurance that 9 probably won't stray too far from the elements that made many fall in love with Rice's delicate, bruised music in the first place, but, by placing them front and center, things are immediately mixed up—an indication that the album isn't simply going to be O Version 2.0.   Full text...

Blogcritics Rating: 7.0

9 shows that Damien Rice has matured and become more confident with his approach to an album, while at the same time not falling off the cliffs of delusional mavericks.  Full text...

Sputnikmusic.com Rating: 6.0

9 is too frustrating at times to ever be considered on a par with its predecessor.  Full text...

Crud Magazine Rating: 6.0

Damien Rice is in the business of pissing people off. It's kind of become his thing.  Full text...

RollingStone Rating: 6.0

The tortured melancholy bit -- part of it, anyway -- takes a back seat on the follow-up to this Irish bard's well-loved 2003 debut.  Full text...

Bullz-eye Rating: 6.0

Damien Rice sounds angry on this release. Really angry. At the world, at everything.  Full text...

Dotmusic Rating: 5.0

"9" picks up where the ubiquitous and two-million selling "O" left off. Hoarse howling to acoustic guitar strumming; folksy plucking to bleeding heart mutterings; Radiohead-a-like moments pull of portentous, look-at-me pauses and full band crescendos.  Full text...

The Independent Rating: 4.0

These songs are emotional knots that seem to get tighter as Rice tries to unpick them - though there's less melodic charm involved here, and much greater readiness to luxuriate in melancholy.  Full text...

Entertainment Ireland Rating: 4.0

Basically, '9' is fuelled by quivering vocal and guitar combos, culminating in a crescendo of impassioned caterwauling/strings for a few bars, then dissipating into some spent, near incoherent, whimpering.  Full text...

StylusMagazine Rating: 2.5

The biggest problem might be Rice’s vocal technique.  Full text...

This album promises nine crimes, but at 10 tracks, it's actually a bargain. Hints, allegations, and things left unsaid.  Full text...

I love damien rice but i don't think that it is as good as O but i love the lyrics, they seem to be very personal to him and express his feelings of love, romance and relationships. The duets work well too!

Rice's 9 did not surprise me on how brilliant it turned out. As an artist, when making new CDs you try to accomplish in making them better than the last, and he did exactly that.

Erik Rating: 9.0

At times the album brilliant, and altough it might be 'nothing new under the sun' most of the songs are very catchy. The voices from Lisa and Damien really work well together.Hope i'll see the both of them performing live in Holland. And like Damien sings:'And truth I only really wanted too be wanted by you you'

O was an absolute triumph. 9 somehow manages to surpass it's sensational predecessor. Songs like Elephant, Accidental Babies and Sleep Don't Weep are heartbreakingly beautiful. Add to that songs like Rootless Tree where Rice cuts loose his otherwise restrained emotions, and you have one of the albums this year should be remembered for. In a word, spectacular.x

Female Rating: 10.0

Oozing with talent, it is quite time Damien produced another album for the public to enjoy. His consistency with his emotion in both O and 9 is pure bliss. Back in 2003, Damien introduces himself in O, with an in love, passionate, and almost shy sound. That tone is brilliantly enhanced with the help of female singer Lisa Hannigan. Now with the album 9, Damien shows a painful, love filled, and at times hateful passion in his music. Again to enhance the pain, Damien is coupled with Lisa. Damien is a true inspiration to music due to his purely personal songs made from his heart and not the publics' (like so many other artists write from).

I actually heard "9" before "O" and thought that it was nothing short of genius. Once I heard "O" it cemented that Rice was one of the premier artist of this time. The writing on both albums is flawless and the production is simply amazing. True fans should check out his Live BBC:Sessions (it can be viewed on youtube.com) Damien Rice= brilliance.

Damien is hands down the best artist I have ever listened to. I love everything about him...from how real his lyrics are to how raw his performances can be at times! I love that he's not a sell out and that his flawed...it's what makes his music, melancholy....angry or not, beautiful.
