The album, produced by the ubiquitous Rick Rubin, is a little bit country, a little bit rock & roll — but also a little bit power balladry, alt-country, and roadhouse boogie.

Equally tuneful, sharply observed tunes include "I Hope," penned with blues master Keb' Mo'; "Everybody Knows," which explores the psychology of celebrity; and "Lubbock or Leave It," which addresses small-town stupidity. In "Taking the Long Way" (released Tuesday), the Dixie Chicks aren't backing down.

Taking The Long Way is truly one of the most personal and passionate albums of the Dixie Chicks yet and promises to be as every bit as powerful and more as fans have come to expect out of their music.

The Dixie Chicks and country music cement their mutual, if acrimonious, breakup.

The Eagles mixed with The Dixie Chicks and a little George Jones and The Band thrown in for good measure.

on first listen, Taking the Long Way seems too somber--in need of a bit of levity and more than a couple of uptempo songs (like the sexy, '60s-flavored "I Like It") to resonate for the long haul. It also seems to lack the writing quality that Darrell Scott, Patty Griffin, and Bruce Robison brought to Home. But on repeated plays, those concerns dissipate.

It shows that you can never back down on what you say or what you believe in. Then Chicks bring hope that we all can speak our minds freely like the amendmit says wwe can. |

There is not a song on the cd that is not excellent. The music created by Martie McGuire and Emily Robison match up beautifully with Natalie Maine's vocals. Nice job, Chicks. |

this album rocks. Natalie has an amazing voice like noone else on earth. She has been blessed with the best voice I've ever heard. Martie and Emily make the album that much better with their awesome music ability and their backround vocals. My fav. song on the album, 'not ready to make nice' not only are the lyrics awesome and powerful, the singing on it brings the point across that much more...love it.... |

I hate country music with a passion. Can't even stand hearing 5 seconds of a country song. But I love "Not Ready To Make Nice". I can relate to it and I love listening to it. It's nice to know that they're not backing down against their comment about George Bush. They're powerful ladies and together they're incredible. |

One of the best albums of the year. Natalie Maines has never sounded better, she has one of the greatest voices in music today. This is vindication at its finest. |

This is an absolutely amazing album. "Not Ready To Make Nice" I personally like the best. This is a great come back for the Dixie Chicks. They are a very powerful vocal and instrumental band. They should be allowed back on the radio. |
