Brimming with heartbreak, solitude, and foggy memories, Feist's "dreams" still sound distant on The Reminder, the singer's outstanding third album.

Perhaps Feist is best explained as the middle ground between the carefree child and responsible adult. She isn't trying to prove one is better than the other; instead, she acknowledges that we are made up of both, and recognition of this truth is key. She offers no advice, makes no bold proclamations and, like the best artists, leads us to draw our own conclusions from the feelings and emotions portrayed throughout the album. The Reminder is just that: a reminder to look, feel, think, and live.

Leslie Feist creates a musical atmosphere for all to enjoy on The Reminder. Feist brings remarkable versatility to the game; here she cements her status as a fantastic solo performer and not just an exemplary group member.

There's much on "The Reminder" that could be labelled "jazz" or "acoustic singer songwriter", but, aided by a ghostly sparse production, nothing comes close to the anonymity of, say, a Corrinne Bailey Rae. Tiny sonic surprises lurk around every unsuspecting corner. Indeed, like her past collaborations, musically it's a veritable lucky bag in terms of range. In terms of quality, it's virtually all top notch.

Recorded in an old Parisian manor house, The Reminder shares the same eclecticism that distinguished 2004’s Let it Die. Demonstrating a lyrical clout to match her name, her songs flit in carefree style from the low-key acoustic opening number So Sorry to the bustling indie-folk of I Feel It All and the soul-jazz of My Moon My Man, co-written with Gonzales, and a vibrant Nina Simone reworking, Sea Lion Woman (sic).

Being part of the rather incestous Canadian music scene, Leslie Feist has always been pretty well-connected. A sometime member of Broken Social Scene, former flatmate of Peaches, mates with Mocky...the list goes on.

Against all odds, The Reminder's 13 songs hang together wonderfully, making good on the promise of Let It Die. We may not know exactly what Leslie Feist's true musical personality is, but we do know she makes great records.

Fearlessly mellow and just as catchy, The Reminder is Feist’s best and most assured release to date.

The Reminder may not surprise, but it does force one to ignore the cloying marketed image and just love Feist for the talented individual that she is. These songs are as beautiful as we’d like to believe.

It's these kinds of songs, seemingly constructed for radio play (this is her major label debut), that mar the otherwise radiant Reminder.

The result is that no matter which genre she essays - country-rock, jazzy shuffles, and even a muted take on 60s-style garage R&B all crop up - she always sounds like herself, rather than a copyist. There's a sense, too, that The Reminder is more than the sum of its parts: while nothing here is wholly original, it is a pleasure for as long as it plays.

The Reminder is rarely exciting or thrilling, and never revolutionary—save such positively hyperbolic associations for the artist herself, who even after this deserves them. Because it’s not that Feist herself is unlistenable, or lacks talent.

The Reminder is as sophisticated as Peaches is raw. Skimming across an erudite mix of jazz, singer/songwriter pop and faint whiffs of indie pop, Feist is the sort of thing only card-carrying NPR donors and upwardly mobile hipsters -- the ones who'll be card-carrying NPR supporters come next pledge drive -- can really get behind. Or pretend to get behind, if it's the latter we're talking about.
