One more album like this and we may be looking at Green Day as not just a second generation punk band, but a first ballot Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band.

The punks prove adept at capturing the vibe and are able to broaden their style to tell the tale with power ballads like "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and the nine-minute "Jesus of Suburbia." Oh, and there's still plenty of spunk in to be found in this Sgt. Pepper-lite.

The titular single is about as old-style Green Day as it gets and it’s pretty state of the art. The rest sounds similarly magnificent, forces marshaled just so, guitars zooming with precision.

The only misstep is the title track, which, despite solid lyrics, is far too similar sonically to the band’s earlier work to be taken seriously.

So yeah, it's not a Green Day album; it's an album recorded by Green Day as the accompaniment to the best rock opera you'll never see on Broadway.

Music in 2004 is full of well-meaning but pan-flashing sloganeers whose tirades against the government-- whether right or wrong-- are ultimately flat, with an overarching sense that what they're saying comes packaged with a spoil date of November '04.

American Idiot is the kind of old-school rock opera that went out of style when Keith Moon still had a valid driver's license, in the tradition of the Who's Tommy, Yes' Relayer or Styx's Kilroy Was Here.

American Idiot returns to the overdriven guitars of previous records, though the band takes a stab at its most sweeping burst of political and social commentary on this loosely-themed album dedicated to the wastelands of American popular and political culture.

Green Day Rock! i love ALL of there other albums and the singles/ songs that were never relesed! and i can gladly say American Idiot has earned its place with the rest of their awsome music! |

Great strategy, great idea for the rock opera. I can't stand Boulevard of Broken Dreams but every other song is awesome and they flow into each other nicely. Letterbomb, which was not a single, is my favorite song of the album. |

i give this CD a 10+! it is the best concept album that i blieve will ever be. in fact it's one of their better CD's. i don't know how anyone could hate this disk. if you don't mind the politcal messages or the amount of swear words used than this album really should be included in your shelf and should never get dusty. the loud punk sound that GD is so famous for is mixed with their softer sides, producing a very wonderful sound that can only be GD. |

I love all of Green Day's songs(including noes from their old cds like "1039 smoothed out slappy hours" and "kerplunk") but these songs definately show the more mature side of them. Now if only they came out with a cd that sort of mixed their old style of music with the newer style. (But I'll still LOVE them if they don't). |

Green Day has always been great and now here they are again. The album starts of amazing, american idiot-boulevard of broken dreams. Then we hit are we the waiting? and it slows down, but picks up with another great one St. Jimmy, and then a very sweet song Give me novacane, and then a song that just seems like a filler, She's a rebel. Extraordinary Girl is definately an experimental plus, and letterbomb is awesome. Wake me up when september ends is as well. Homecoming would be as amazing as Jesus of Suburbia if it didnt have the rock-n-roll girlfriend part. Whatsername was a GREAT ending to this, its just like those movies where the two main characters just sorta glance at each other and then walk away after everything is all over. An awesome story, an awesome CD. |

OMG! this is possibly they're best. I honestly love all they're songs, but these songs are really really good. They really need to like mix them, like others have said, but it is really really good. Some of the songs on there are like chart toppers. I LOVE green day and i like have OCGDD and American Idiot is a really really good disk. |

It's terrible i can't stand it. Slow and bad and just useless. And it is NOT PUNK! if you want real punk go listen to the old stuff [SexPistols,The Clash, etc.] |

Is there THE PERFECT ALBUM? Well, probably American Idiot is close to that. There's no bad songs in it. The least good songs are "Are we the waiting" and "Extrodinary Girl" and the best songs are "Whatsername" and "Boulevard of Broken Dreams". Some say Dookie was their best "punk" album, probably true, but this is ten times better produced and in my opinion their best so far. |

PERFECT, the one album that lead to many other great ones, like Hypnotize, Memzmerize, Sufferer and the witness, black parade, Stadium arcadium, the list goes on, its like without this album, all of those bands would suck. I especially love jesus of suburbia, i want to point out that i liked it before it was a video. |

Some people say Green Day is overrated, that they're sellouts and that they're not punk anymore because of American Idiot. They're still punk because they're no longer fitting the old expectations. That's what I think. American Idiot has to be one of the greatest albums out there. |

I don't consider Green Day to be a punk band. And I don't really think that THEY consider themselves that way either. To me they're a rock 'n roll band. If you want to listen to real punk music: try the Sex Pistols.
Anyway, Green Day IS a good band though and I enjoy their music. |

I love all of there albums! I have never heard a better band than Green Day! I honestly can say I cannot pick a favorite album! I rate all of them 100!!! -looks for 100 button- ah damn, no 100 button... lmfao. I have all of there albums except for BIAB, and I am looking forward to getting that one too! and then I am looking forward to 2008, when there next new CD comes out! lol. I have all the current songs memorized, and I have to say this; My friends and I all listen to Green Day obsessivly, and we see no difference in the music, what I mean, is that there style has never changed, it is always different, yes, but, if you want to get technical, its not punk, its 'alternative'. lol. The word 'alternative' can mean a wide variaty of music. differnt sounds. Ex; Misery, compaired to Geek Stink Breath. If you understand what I am saying then you are a true fan. It doesn't matter If you like the music, actualy, as Mike says, they write for themselves, and if others like it, thats great. Punk isn't supposed to be all 'bad' it's supposed to be about doing as you like, and not as others expect of you. Take into conception the meaning of the song, Minority. It is about being an individual. Try and understand this, and actualy look into things, don't just listen to a song and say you don't like it, because every song has a story behind it. I love all of there songs. I also know the storys. But even if I didn't, that wouldn't change that fact, but please, take what I have said into consideration. They are worth every point givin to them. ~Julia |

Hi... I am an obssessive Green Day fan. I like alot of the songs on this album but... They have gone down the road to disaster that many punk rock bands, and indeed, many other bands (not just punk rock) have taken... they are trying to sell out on the corruption of this awful country! I believe that if you EVER hear ANY band's songs in a commercial for ANYTHING (for Green Day it was the Yahoo!Music commercial), then they have become sellouts. I doubt that alot of you will agree with me. In fact, I think I will get a few rants for this! But this is by far their worst album, in the sense that it was a landmark on their trip to conformity. I wish they would go back to their old song-writing style! I mean, the #1 song on this album, which won a billboard award, was Wake Me Up When September Ends! Not one mention of political corruption in that song! So please, don't call this their best album. It is their most disheartening. |

Green Day will go down as one of the greatest rock bands ever. They are original and supremely talented musicians, composers and singers. I've loved punk all my life, and "American Idiot" brought me back to the genre after 30 years. Yes. I'm almost 50 and I listen to Green Day with my husband and 8-year-old son. "Extraordinary Girl" sounds like a tribute to the Beatles. "We are the Waiting" could be an anthem for Gen X. Every son on "American Idiot" is a gem. Good is good, and Green Day is ageless. |

I have to say, this album blew my mind. I wasn't that into Green Day, (my parents bought Dookie back when it first came out, but I'd never listened to anything except "Basket Case"), and I thought about just not buying American Idiot because all of my friends said it sucked....but then I saw them play "Holiday" on the Billboard Music Awards, and I got that damn solo stuck in my head...two weeks later I was forking over $14.99 for AI at the record store. I loved every song on it except for "Extraordinary Girl" the first time I heard it, but in spite of that I must have listened to it about 100 times that first month XD. Anyway, I eventually realized that the reason I had to listen to it so many times was because it's just so....BIG. I had to take it in one bite at a time, so to speak. It's like the biggest, greatest Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich of all time. I still listen to it regularly (probably once or twice a week)--straight through, of course, as I like to think of AI as one long song, you can get the full effect that way--and I've come to like Extraordinary girl almost as much as the rest of the album :)
I eagerly await the arrival of Green Day's rumored eighth studio album; this album converted me to a Green Day fan. I now own every album they've ever produced, plus the Japanese-only releases "Tune In, Tokyo" and "The Live Tracks." I think anyone who likes music will be able to enjoy Green Day, even if they disagree with the politics (I happen to agree with them quite strongly--I've been hating on Bush Jr. since 2001, and it was nice to see that sentiment finally being acknowledged).
P.S. The Sex Pistols are not Punk Rock; they are assholes and they are self-proclaimed sellouts. I wish people would stop claiming that the Clash and the Sex Pistols were the only two punk rock bands in existence. If anything, the Ramones were the only real punk band from back then, since the Clash and Sex Pistols just ripped them off anyway. But really, it doesn't matter--people need to stuff the genre-related bickering and just enjoy the music. |

first of all, who cares what genre they are or arent? the point is, they kick ass, theyve changed a little, so what? favorite song on AI: letterbomb, thats even billie joe's favorite, and "die die die", just because one song doesnt critisize the media and government, doesnt mean it cant be at the top of the charts, do you even understand the album's story? |

Alright, now...everyone who says Green Day sold out...you're full of crap and need to go swallow a knife, have you not realized that we haven't seen or heard from Green Day for awhile? ever think that they kinda gradually turned into the image that they are now. Also yeah...not one of their best albums ever but hey...cut them some slack, you win some you lose some, also forget all of the stupid "meanings" of the songs...aren't songs just supposed to be something that sounds good to you? and let's be honest here...who actually understands any singer until you look up the lyrics. So all in all Green Day still kicks ass, you people need stop bashing them and get a kick to the ball sack(or clit if you're a girl)...and I'm out. Peace. |

I think they are amazing! And Billie Joe has a wonderful voice! He's seriously someone with a talent. Although dealing with real life, he is pretty stupid. Plus the fact that he's bi and that he makes out with his band mate [Mike] while he has a wife and kids. I don't think he's giving them a good example. But if it comes to music i think he is AWESOME! He has a great voice, and i enjoy listening to all their songs. [Well most.] I think their old albums kinda sucked. But American Idiot brought them to the top. It really is their best album. I hate their song All by myself, and some others, but obviously not everyone can have every single song being good. And most of the songs on American Idiot are awesome. I enjoy listening to Green Day. They are amazing, i love them!!!!!!!

Wow girls and guys, I really don't know how you can listen to this!!! I mean... I love their sound but all the "cussing" and the" OHH I JUST HATE YOU" stuff is kinda... really wrong. Songs are suposed to lift you up, not make you hate the world. I mean think about it...If you listen to songs that are like that then what does your mind get filled with?? Yes, the whole "Everyone hates me and I hate everyone else" thing. I personally think that we should as teens (who have a hard enough time getting through our lives) should be listening to Switchfoot, Relient k or Hawk Nelson that will inspire us not tear us down! |

Well it looks like Greenday is happy saying F&ck America. They don't want to be American Idiots and yet their lyrics reflect who they are. I guess they have forgotten who made them rich in the first place. They should give a big hug to a terrorist that has a bomb strapped to them. |

Great album, my 2nd or 3rd favorite of theirs, and here's why: As an avid Green Day fan (yeah, I jumped onboard with Dookie like everyone else not from the Berkeley pop-punk scene), I enjoyed almost every song on this album. I especially enjoyed the two nine minute pieces, that took balls and Green Day excuted the daunting task perfectly. The album also threw dirt in the face of the NeoCons, who are now as dead as the Radical Republicans. Good Riddance. For all the critics...its okay to like the old Green Day, but everybody was getting tired of Dookie and Insomniac and Nimrod. Warning was a very different direction for the band because the lyrical content became less personal and more political. True Green Day fans saw this shift in direction coming, and I for one welcomed it. Hopefully their next album will deliver, and I hope that its not overplayed by MTV and pop music stations. By the way, I loved Boulevard of Broken Dreams, until everybody loved Boulevard of Broken Dreams, and it got played every friggin day for months.
And a note to Gary: voicing discontent is very American, conformity is not, therefore, Green Day is very American. Gotta love 'em! ;) |

Green Day used to be my obsessive teen band. I loved them more than any other band out there. Of course that faze soon passed. But I still love the boys as much as any of you. Though now I like different bands like Cute is What We Aim for. You should give them a listen. Not too many of my friends listen to Green Day any more either. I couldn't tell you how much fun it was going to thier concert in '04. Oh, I had a new kind of fun. American Idiot was a different thing for the boys. It was more 'down to earth', if you will. Compared to everything else which was all about girl and masterbation. But I know all of you love Green Day and would fight for them anyday. Love you all, ~ Thea Bugg |

this album was a pretty good album, i do like the old green day a little better. and to those that complain and say "yea well green day isnt punk, go look at the sex pistols and the who" any genre changes with time and right now green day is pretty much punk. and to the redneck republican who hates the anti-american slogan, yes i do think american is the greatest country in the world and i wouldnt want to live anywhere else, but some of the policies and laws are retarded, and the people! omg the people are so ignorant and rude. so if u wanna complain about the song "american idiot" or anything like that, first look at allll the ignorance that our country contains, and then try and tell me that u think americans are intelligent and kind people. |

I don't care wot anyone sez! American Idiot is one of Green Day's best albums ever so far, and always will be. Either it or Dookie is their best. even the weakest songs on it are real good and i like the whole story thing - the songs have 'depth' and mean something, quite a change from the days when they made simple, meaningless but fun-loving and catchy tunes, even though they were equally as good. American Idiot won Green Day a whole new generation of fans when people were beginning to lose interest. Before AI, I knew nothing of Green Day, unforch, but when I heard the highlights like 'American Idiot,'Boulevard of Broken Dreams'and 'Wake Me Up When September Ends'I was hooked so I decided to check out the older stuff and I'm now Green Day obssessed. But I can't stand fans who love this but never listen to their old stuff - it's as if it means absolutely nothing and shouldn't. Those people who say they hate the new Green Day have to face it - American Idiot was a huge success and won tons of nominees and numerous awards obviously cos it is a magical album and the majority love it - you can't change the opinion of millions of people who have decided they like it. Oh yeah, and what's the deal wiv genres? Almost everyone classes it as some punk genre or another, and if it's pop punk or some other genre other than punk rock there's nothing wrong wiv dat. I'd personally class it as a mixture of punk rock/pop punk but what does it matter? It's good music, full stop, but it's pointless and immature to argue over genres. American Idiot is one of Green Day's best albums, probably the best album of 2004 and possibly one of da best in the decade. |

This album is awesome, man. I think we can all agree that it's different from their previous work, but change can be a good thing. Their old music will always be around, but I'm glad they've decided to experiment and take a different route from everything else that's out there. They're extremely talented, have a lot to say, and are still just as insane as they were in the early 90's. Who cares if every single song doesn't fit into some "punk" or "rock n' roll" genre? Great music should never be limited. If you love Green Day and haven't seen the music video for "Jesus Of Suburbia" (which if you're a fan, I'm sure you have), you have to check it out. It's long, but worth every second. As is this album. ^_~ |

This is possibly my least favorite Green Day album, next to Shennanigins. It's nothing like what they usually do, and they try to make every song a "Greatest hit". Nimrod and Warning were better without putting every song in a minor key. |
