Cee-Lo tries to decide between love and suicide, Burton begins interjecting jarring rhythmic accents to make sure the song doesn't become too normal — and techno-rap-house-whatever perfection is achieved.

Danger Mouse himself has suggested "psychedelic soul". Done and dusted. And damn near divine.

R&B, hip-hop, soul, blues, funk are just a few of the fine elements of music that Gnarls Barkley use to create their genre-bending debut album, St. Elsewhere.

Their debut album is a pop dream, a soul fantasy, a musical Oz.

Strange as fuck has a smell and a sound; it’s the wind coming through the right speaker during “Crazy,” but God knows what that scent is.

On Gnarls Barkley's debut, St. Elsewhere, hip-hop is big and amorphous enough to include everything from a lively revamp of a new-wave classic to Screaming Jay Hawkins-style spookiness to trippy songs about necrophilia and feng shui.

Luckily, St Elsewhere does not disappoint, trampling over musical boundaries with relish, throwing up moments of psychedelic hip-hop (the title track, Feng Shui), ebullient neo-Motown (Smiley Faces), 1960s swamp rock (The Boogie Monster), stoned hip- hop/P-funk (Necromancing) and Isleys-style funk (the superb closing track, The Last Time).

Danger Mouse assembles a wide range of settings for Cee-Lo's sly, emotionally engaging vocals, with the cautionary "Smiley Faces" offering an updated take on Motown's swingy charm, "Go-Go Gadget Gospel" harnessing a sped-up horn riff to a garage beat, and "Gone Daddy Gone" building a powerful techno-rock groove on a descending synth-line.

The result is filthily refreshing and beside itself with ingenuity, a beastly union of early Mothers of Invention crudity with the combustible sexuality of Diana Ross and George Clinton.

Unless you're expecting a flawless album of laid-back summery soul all in the same vein as Crazy, you'll find St Elsewhere a real treat - kaleidoscopic in its diversity and a testament to the duo's accomplished musicianship.

You are Danger Mouse. You have mashed up The Beatles' White Album with Jay-Z's Black Album to create the groundbreaking Grey Album.

Rap/Rock/Funk/Soul Cee-Lo never fails to impress me lyrically and the beats by DJ Danger Mouse are supreme. This is what music is supposed to be. |

I think God was in the studio helping sir cee lo on this one.. This is the kind of music I've been waiting for. I cant wait to drop my album... I think he's the only artist I can compare myself to. Being crazy has never been so sexy. What a shame...I can't even play the Cd without feeling like an animal.. What should i do with all this aggression? |
