They dress like extras from Russell Brand: The Musical, all back-combed hair, circulation-inhibiting trousers and shoddy eyeliner, but the Horrors have respectable influences. Count in Fives owes more than just its spiralling punk clatter to 60s garage rockers the Sonics. And their cover of Screaming Lord Sutch's spook-rock masterpiece Jack the Ripper shows ghost-train pop and instrument flagellation can be a thrilling combination.

The Horrors have delivered in spades here, and provided a much-needed alternative to the burgeoning nu-rave and thug-indie scenes while they're at it. And what's that you say - they look great too? Cancel the backlash.

Strange House is unlikely to win this youthful quintet any new converts. The best advice to anyone wishing to sample The Horrors would be to catch them live – preferably in as small a venue as possible – and seek out the first two singles before committing to this debut long-player.
