That’s not to say that the record sounds blurry or disconnected; the songs seem to follow a logic of their own, nothing like the standard arc-to-denouement that pervades most post-rock acts. Jesu knows exactly when to tighten up the guitars, with some melodic bridges (“Transfigure”) invoking memories of the breakdown in Hum’s “Stars.”

Jesu's second album is a welcome addition to legend of Justin Broadrick and further proves his immense talent. Crushing, beautiful and layered, Conqueror is an extremely worthwhile album for anyone with interest.

It's as if Justin Broadrick and company boiled down the best parts of your record collection, distilled them and concocted a strange, new brew. It's the sort of pedigree that'll either set Jesu up to be the next rock'n'roll savior or a too-complicated cult act whose sophistication's only appreciated by the musical literate.

One might hope that others follow Broadrick's lead, but there's probably no surer way to convince him to abandon Jesu and its rush of pure ecstatic sound. If he could hear exactly what he wanted without having to make it himself, he most likely wouldn't make it at all.

What is most disappointing about this album is that despite the seamless blending of different elements taken from metal, industrial and electronic musical circles, there is very little progression beyond these boundaries or previous Jesu releases.

While perhaps it's not as groundbreaking as prior efforts, Broadrick's interpretation of the '90s pop that evidently left an impression on him rings honest and forthright.
