The album flows from start to finish and contains ‘real’ tracks, the ones that are over four minutes long, occasionally even over five. With the concrete musical formation, his dulcet tone and tales of love, belonging, and happiness it is easy to understand why he is at the plateau he is after only one album.

His debut, Get Lifted, was nominated for eight Grammys and won three, putting Once Again in the position of having to match its success or be considered a turkey.

Once Again is every bit as confident, creative and consistently daring as its predecessor, with 13 well-crafted lover-man cuts that find Legend gently nudging his sound in new directions with the help of producers like will.i.am and Kanye.

Legend's pretty, yearning voice continues to please, proving once again that Marvin Gaye and Donny Hathaway are influences that never go out of style.

Over thirteen tracks, Legend ranges from strummy rock ballads (the excellent "Show Me") to McCartney-style love songs ("Where Did My Baby Go") and Temptations-channeling R&B ("Slow Dance"). Often the tunes take surprising, oddball turns -- near the end of the sprightly first single, "Save Room," a dark organ freakout emerges for a few measures before quickly disappearing.

Like its predecessor, Once Again's midsection bulges with excess MOR fat, but unlike Legend's debut, the album doesn't resurrect itself by the end. In other words, it never really reaches the heights of Get Lifted.

The few great songs on Once Again are big successes that will stay in my playlists for a while, and coupled with the strong production (or should I say engineering?) on even the weakest tracks, Legend can at least look his modern soul competition in the eye. Unfortunately for us, there aren't many artists in the genre who can do the same.

The lunge for the mainstream is too pronounced, and probably ill-advised, inasmuch as it places him in direct comparison with more expressive, adept singers. The better tracks make best use of Legend's vocal mix of Bill Withers' warmth with the reflective nature of Donny Hathaway: the smooth, Philly soul-styled "Each Day Gets Better", and "Slow Dance", whose sleek early-Sixties R&B sound recalls The Impressions and "Groovin'"-era Young Rascals.

I think this is an awesome album .. the lyrics, the music, everything about it is great. Everyone should see JL live, if only just to experience what a REAL artist sounds like. I've seen him in concert twice and it was 150% worth every penny. |

I love it! Definitely adult contempary and sophisticated. The arrangements are phenomenal. "Another Again" and "Heaven" are great collaborations with Kanye West. "Save Room" and "Slow Dance" will have your feet groovin'. I've seen his show as well...and I'm searching for another city to catch him in. |

I loved "Get Lifted", and wondered how on earth John Legend was going to make his next album equally as good. It's a different sound and vibe from his first album, but definetly a cool, fresh new sound. I love "Show Me". |

Amazing album, John legend is trully talented and what makes his music so beautiful is that it is not too over produced like many of the rnb songs out today, John elgend brings back the soul and smoothness that was lacking in modern music. The album can be listened from start to finish everysong has its own quality but my favourites are "PDA", "Each Day Gets Better" and "Heaven" |

I was born in 1980 and growing up I had my father playing Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Ray Charles and many others on his real to real. I mean that feel good music... when you walked in the living room filled with incese burning and the smell of rum/coke. John Legend has that type of music of the past. Critics who don't give this album a good review is someone who doesn't understand music from the soul!!!!! |

My first memory was of my parents cooking in the kitchen singing Marvin Gaye songs. John's music really brings back good memories. But he still finds a way to make it his own. I can't wait to hear the next album. |
