In short, some of the songs on Rebels are the best Lucero has ever written. The rest are for the most part as good as anything they’ve ever done -- which no longer seems to be enough.

On the band's new album, Rebels, Rogues & Sworn Brothers, Nichols pushes his voice a little more than usual, but that mainly means he rasps higher and longer. Mostly, he lies back and lets his bandmates rumble along at their usual parade-stride pace, while adjunct member Rick Steff fills in the gaps with tinkling piano and sustained organ riffs.

Of the many bands that do the suddenly pervasive Springsteen thing better than the Killers, Memphis' Lucero are perhaps the most surprising. Not because they lack the technical or emotional range, but because they've always seemed too Southern to convincingly evoke the Jersey shore. But Lucero get around, as their heavy tour schedule and all those songs about the road attest.

you listen to this album once and you just cant stop. it has been in my cd player for months now and the songs just get deeper and deeper with each track. if you dont own this albumi suggets you get it. |
