Laura Veirs has still crafted a strong album here, with greater riches, both musically and lyrically, than 90 per cent of her contemporaries. But to her growing number of fans (read: sticklers), this is not as good as its predecessor. Perhaps it’s time for her to find new modes of inspiration.

For a few songs, Saltbreakers makes me feel like a bitter, harsh asshole for being so quick to judge, before slowly floating back to confirm most of my suspicions. While ultimately harmless, it's a perfect example of the mediocrity that comes in the wake of innovative revivalists, routinely competent "smart" songs that aim low and leave no impression on landing.
