While the keyboards are an integral part of the bands sound, Marillion have always used them in an aggressive ambient way courtesy of Mark Kelly and tempered with the always-beautiful guitar work of Steve Rothery.

For fans, Somewhere Else makes a lovely transition out of the emotional, intense, and dense Marbles. For newbies, Marbles is going to be the place to start - and then give Somewhere Else a try as it's easily one of their most focused and solid albums since 1995's Afraid Of Sunlight.

Are Marillion still going? That seems to be the standard reaction to news of their new album from those not in the know - but get closer to the band and you'll discover otherwise. They could hardly be in ruder health as they deliver their fourteenth album, with a loyal fanbase other bands would give their guitar straps for.

Musically accomplished, for sure, the album is also fairly bland. It may hold some appeal for fans of acts such as Embrace or even Crowded House but for all its endeavour, Somewhere Else lacks any real spark.

Sure if you're a fan you might like it. Maybe even if you're a fan of opera rock bands like Muse, Genesis or Sting you might find a way in and past the muso music musicness over content. But if not, I doubt you'll be too easily converted by this effort...
