Boxer is filled with some very fine songwriting. The National tends to be a little moody but they sure know how to write a catchy song. I foresee myself reaching for Boxer again and again, even years from now.

Boxer works best as a mood piece; it's also the first National release to work as a whole, and it's the best album I've heard so far this year.

A while ago I wrote a review of The National at the 100 Club, and confessed that their last song of the night left me in tears. It was the climax of an emotionally draining set. By the time I listened to Gospel, the final track on the band's new album Boxer, I found the salt pricking my eyes again.

There are still touches of Tindersticks’ torchsong mannerisms, but Squalor Victoria shares a rumbling energy with Interpol, while Start a War deploys cello and woodwind as gracefully as REM.

This album, like the last, sources success from patience, its careful attention to detail, its willingness to listen and respond with consideration.

On this album, everyone seems to be playing half asleep except for Devendorf on drums, the album is still tremendous, but only because these guys are better in their sleep than most are awake, but an alarm clock would have helped.

What it lacks in muscle, it makes up many times over in beauty and intrigue. Nobody who's ever enjoyed music with a hard drink or a rough cigarette can afford to pass this record by.

There are flashes of prettiness, but this feels, disappointingly, like deadened, muffled music.
