The title may be an obituary, but the album proves that hip hop is alive and well when it's in the right hands.

Inevitably, the record is far from perfect, but music doesn't have to find everything in its right place. At times, it even demands conflict, and considering the state of his career and the industry that spawned him, Nas is right on schedule.

Hip Hop Is Dead is a stab at the current state of popular mediocrity in Hip-Hop and is a testament to why Nas is still considered-by a sizeable amount of fans and even begrudging detractors-a trend setting artistic genius.

Like many of his previous efforts, lyrically and conceptually, it's second-to-none. But musically and in terms of execution, it doesn't always hit the mark.

BETTER THAN STILLMATIC seriously. Combination of raw hip hop, soul hip hop and concept art (who killed it listen 5 or 6 times and you'll realise the genius of this song) as well as only one average track make this CLASSIC album slightly better than stillmatic. People will come to realise this by february next year. Also note that the production is very good reminiscent of the perfect production and lyrics of his debut. |

A great CD from Nas that comes right on time. Also, Nas' work should never be compared to his previous work because that would ignore his growth as an artist, something most artist lack. growth |

Great album, Lyrically its strong and very consistent the production isn't bad comparedto some Nas albums. Its a bit long at 16 tracks and suffers from 2 average tracks and 1 track("who killed it") which at times feels brilliant and at times completely idiotic, but regardless its a bold statement just like the rest of the album.... Can't forget about you is really where its at |

I didn't give it a 10 cuz nothin perfect, but NAS def. set a new era on the map. I give it to NAS cuz he has always kept it real with his music and it shows he's one key player keeping hip-hop alive. Hip-Hop is dieing cuz hip-hop artists and us as listeners have forgotten what hip-hop is really about. Not those club bangers talkin about bitches and drinkin and ill whips, but about real life shit, a way to express those feelings about ur hood, ur life, ur world.... |

I think that this is nas on top of his game, he is back to the poetic delivery that he opend with, not saying that this album is as good as the illmatic, but he took the same approach |

The best album of the year i heard about 6 songs and this album is a problem I heard hip hop is dead, money over bs is a problem nas gets his swagger back, u cant kill me has an ok beat and the lyrics are fire, carry on tradition is a shot to all these young rappers who are killing hip hop, he comes with the title track hip hop is dead its a good single and has lyrical fire, then he has who killed it? its a funny song but kind of lacks as a nas record, then what the world was waiting for the collabo of jayz & nas the beat is fire and so is the lyrics i would say nas verse was better, blunt ashes is produced by Chris Webber yes the basketball player a simple beat backed up with good lyrics, hustlers the collabo with game and dre on the beat the hardest track on the cd nas shows he didnt lose his lyrical supremacy |

This album is the best hip hop album (barring Food & Liquor) to be released this year. Nas displays true lyricism, along with beat selections which compliment his words rather then obscure them. A classic. |

I think everybody knows Hip Hop is dying right now. Its going to take artists like Nas, Jeezy, and Jay Z to recover Hip Hop. I own this albulm because I know Nas is already good lyricly. Nas spits how Hip Hop today is just about money and stupid dances. Nas is real with this one !!!!!!!!!!! |

I have absolutly nothing negative to say about this amazing album, this album has to be the best shit of the year( hands Down ) nas is the king, he's trying to get these wack bum rappers that's not making any real music off thier asses to do so. Who killed it?(track #6) is a wonderful, clever, genius record. It's funny, it's silly, it's interesting it makes you listen to it over and over. I can talk about this album forever. F |

alright this is the best album of the year no doubt. the south came in and killed hip hop. it needs to stay just new york and cali the origional stuff. hip hop needed a boost and this cd is it. nas came so hard with this album it is the best album in a long time. i just have one problem. i got the dirty version of the album and on the song hip hop is dead it says If hip hop should die before I wake I'll put an extended clip and body 'em all day! Roll to every station, wreck the DJ! Roll to every station, wreck the DJ!
i thought it was if hip hop should die before i wake I'll put an extended clip inside of my AK Roll to every station, murder the DJ... Roll to every station, murder the DJ..."

i honestly think it's off the charts amazing... jiga is entitled to his opinion even tho it seems as if he's living in the past when jay-z and nas were still at it... the point is that the music is crafty and beyond that's all that should matter to artists nowadays |

The Album is slammin as close to a classic as the Black Album is!!! But YO!!! Who is this clown AZZ Cat who gave hip-hop is dead 2.0!!! Yo Son!!! You need to start reading between the lines when you listen to hip-hop instead of just listening to beats. Because lyrically Jay-Z can't touch Nas wit a police warrant!!! So Stop listening to hip-hop and judging it by just beat read between the line you wack Azz Ni@@a!!! "The chain be like 100K been shining since shantay rockanne made runaway, that be a minute, genises is deep and my features are that of a GOD it not a Facade in fact this rapper wanna be Nas!!!" Wow...Genious. His lyrical output was spectacular and most important he portrayed the message he wanted to send, hip hop is dead. His consistent mentions of old school rappers like kool Herc is a smart attempt at sparking people to inquire about them, to learn of hip hops foundation so they dont screw it up. |

Beautifully produced and written best song 'Hip Hop is dead" best collabo "Black Republican" Best creative song"Who Killed It" worst song none, this is a classic album. this what hip hop has been waiting for. thealbum actually followed the albums theme, something most rappers don't do these days. NAS just took a another step away from Jay-Z and running with his place as the 3rd best rapper behind biggie Smalls and 2pac, and gettin closer to that G.O.A.T title if he hasn't already caught it. Undisputed King Of New York |

Just when rap becomes uninspired and rappers using the game as a hustle to make a quick buck, Nas comes back with a creative classic. He tells his views of hip-hop and returns to his back-in-the-day style of rap. Entertains the listener with hood stories and concepts. |

This is a perfect album. The songs relates to the title of the C.D. Arguable the best album of the year. Not the best from Nas but this album shows that another "illmatic" is coming soon. The fire is back under nas and the fire would only become stronger. This is the N. |

Hip hop is dead, and it woulda been dead since march 9th 1997 if it wasnt for Nas and the other few who helped keep it alive. Nas is the greatest, no doubt, Its not realistic to expect an illmatic or god's son from him right now, but its still a great album, one more classic from the king of Real Rap, Big L is dead, Pun's gone, red, meth, and most greatest rappers are past their primes, so let's appreciate the great rappers we still have, like Nas, Jada, Cormega, and everyone still reppin real rap, Common, Em, Kweli, Mobb Deep for life, Fuck G unit

This is another hot classic since All Eye'z On Me (2Pac). NaS & Pac are the only 2 best hip hop Gaints out there East & West. We never had a great album like this one for almost 10 years, though The Documantary (The Game) & The Black Album (Jay-Z) were close. I refer to this album as ILLMATIC 2 or THE REALMATIC. 1 Love! |

Hip Hop Is Dead is probably the greatest album that an artist has made recently. Nas is an excellent artist, with excellent music. I love listening to his music because it usually means something and teaches a lesson. Nas raps about what he sees. He's one of the greatest rap artist. |

NO Doubt, one of the best hip hop albums of the year, nas is a living rappin legend and he is holding on to his crown, not as good as illmatic, still. but can he ever top illmatic this late on in his career, prob not, but he still has the ability to run rings aroung these so-called MCs today.....and that definatly includes 50! |
