Sputnikmusic.com Rating: 8.6

Trent Reznor makes an easily digestible album with hooks galore, heart, and loads of what we have come to expect from NIN. And he does it better then he has in nearly 15 years. Angst? What angst, this is fun, interesting, dark, and entertaining.  Full text...

Entertainment Weekly Rating: 8.3

Reznor's Year Zero makes for riveting, uneasy listening.  Full text...

Times Online Rating: 8.0

On his sixth studio album Trent Reznor imparts a vital message to his fans — the world is all messed up, or something. It romps along though, living up to the stickered promise of “16 Noisy New Songs”.  Full text...

Zero adds up.  Full text...

RollingStone Rating: 8.0

On Year Zero, Reznor doesn't exactly sound like he's having fun -- does he ever? But he runs out of disc space before he runs out of ideas, and it's the first time that's happened in quite a while.  Full text...

PrefixMag Rating: 7.5

It's looser and less self-conscious and much more engaging, despite a marketed storyline about a totalitarian government set in the future that's not only overdone but also is genuinely confusing. Instead of trying to push the boundaries of new sounds, he's using the few he finds most pleasing and/or accessible and works within their parameters.  Full text...

PitchFork Rating: 6.7

A disquieting apocalyptic vision largely recorded on the road. The songs still deal with Reznor's tried-and-true topics-- including the destructive powers of addiction, religion, and authority-- but the record's framework is new. Instead of just chronicling his own fatalistic tendencies, this time Reznor is taking on the entire world's hastening downward spiral.  Full text...

Popmatters Rating: 6.0

The record’s heart is black, and hollow, and cold. Plus, its heavy-handed electronic motions fit into neither the boundaries of rock, metal, or pop… but on it Reznor shows a newfound, almost fanatical confidence in his art that never fails to impress.  Full text...

Its nihilism can grate, but it makes an impression.   Full text...

Year Zero's not the fully realized album that we've come to expect from the master of user-friendly industrial.  Full text...

Slant Magazine Rating: 6.0

"Hyperpower!," the opening track to Year Zero doesn't disappoint in this regard, nor does it do its name injustice. The one-minute-and-42-second song contains just about every major theme on the album, layered into a catastrophic mess that sounds oddly exquisite. The problem is that those layers, when pulled apart and spread over 16 songs, don't add up to the chaos and immediacy of that brief sonic explosion.  Full text...

The Independent Rating: 6.0

Musically, Reznor claims the sample-montages of Public Enemy's Bomb Squad as the main influence, but these tracks are nowhere near as shocking, relying on his trademark industrial-rock tools: drums like steam hammers, guitars like the foul offspring of chainsaw and bulldozer, and very quiet verses that build to screamy-shouty choruses about cool Goth things like apathy, aliens, telepathy and murder.  Full text...

I was kind of disapointed by this album. The lyrics and the music sound different, it doesn't even feel like Nine Inch Nails when I listen to it. There is little variety in the sound of each song. Most of all I was really let down by the lyrics, some of them are a bit cheesy. But, despite all these things, It's still a good album and I still enjoy the majority of the songs.

I like the sound to most of the songs. Though, as another user mentioned, doesn't sound exactly like NIN. The lyrics aren't that bad, but they could be better. I guess I prefer depressing lyrics over environmental destruction lyrics. The CD is much longer than the last two albums (Can't really say the Fragile is longer since it is two disks and both disks are relatively short), so that gives this album a little extra credit. Including tilt, I give this album 9.0.

this is the most important release from this artist and may very well be the last one we see because of the ever changing reality around us. the problem with fans listening to this album and giving it any rating less then ten is because they havent quite abolished their ego's. but it is eventual. we will all see how important this is when we have our final interview with god (for those that die)...

zlajazlo Rating: 3.0

This album is nothing to the other albums. Every song starts almost the same. Survivalism and The Good Soldier are good here. Everything else's just crap...The Fragile RULES!!!!

it's controversial and inspiring. It’s seem to be one of Trent’s best work. I recommended and fuck it’s awesome. Trent Reznor is back in action.

Calei Rating: 10.0

This is a bit of a departure from the normal NIN sound, but it's still got IT. That quintessential thing that defines Trent Reznor's music. For a man known for his ability to recreate his sound and to not play off the sound from every other album, this is perfect.
I look forward to seeing the accompanying US tour, probably in '08.

For anyone who is confused with the storyline that goes with it, just look at our current events and read the lyrics.

The whole idea and effort behind this is amazing and worth it.

very good album, at first when I listened to the album I thought it being worst then with teeth, but i listened to it again and it was much better the secound time around. Deffenitly better than With Teeth, Reznor gets better while he ages, like Steve Nash.

Liz Rating: 10.0

This is the greatest album Trent had done since The Downward Spiral. He has really come through, you can tell he believes in this album because of how good it turned out. If you've been a NIN fan for ages (like me) or if you're just beginning to get into them, Year Zero is the perfect album. Trent Reznor has still got it.

Liv Rating: 10.0

Not quite a ten, but certainly good enough to be rated as nothing less than a nine.

I love NIN new, more industrial sound. Trent Reznor does what other metal artists can't and will never do; creating heavy music without the use of tearing apart his vocal chords.

I also like the "1984" vibe I got from this. If we remain ignorant to the government invading our privacy for our "safety", it's just going to progress into a completely totalitarian, fascist government. The consequences of that happening are grim, and Trent Reznor is just trying to wake people up.

There aren't any tracks that I don't like, all of them stand out in their own way. Except maybe for "Vessel" and "The Good Soldier".

I would recommend this album to ANY Nine Inch Nails fan with an open mind, or generally any heavy industrial fan. Or hell, find your friendly neighborhood raver. They'd like it, too.

Gabriele Rating: 7.0

Given that The Fragile is definitely my NIN's favourite work and one of my favourites globally, this album is pretty good but it does not reach that level. However, it sounds definitely better that With Teeth, since it appears more like a concept album built around a strong idea than a collection of differently born songs.

Jae Rating: 10.0

I love Year Zero, the storyline, the sound, everything. It's a bit different than the other albums, but as a whole, I like it even more than any of the others.

Luis Rating: 9.0

great stuff. the musical effort, which is brilliant, ads up with a strong, very strong, concept. Having lyrics that refer to other things than only trent himself, is a surprise. it worls reaaly good.

Alex Rating: 10.0

Amazing lyrics, extraordinary sound, Trent has some amazing talent in his music.

Nela Rating: 10.0

Trent changed so much and so his music changed too, event hough it's pretty different from the previous works he has done, i think this is the best one, because he dedicated all himself in this album and he really did the greatest job ever. Maybe NIN it's not the same thing anymore, but let's face the truth nothing remains constant forever, and for me this is the best change...

Geraldo Rating: 7.0

This is a good album but definetly not the best of all his previous work. survivalism, Capital G, and The greater good are my fav out of the album. the beginning did in fact draw me in the same way somewhat damaged did on the fragile. but it failed in the long run. the story he tells through this album is genious but just wasnt enough. he did give some amazing sounds which made me think "how did he come up with this beautiful noise?" year zero just doesnt stand up to the downward spiral or the fragile. eventhough this album did not live up to my expectations Trent Reznor is still a God.
