It's hardly surprising that OutKast have opted to follow many of their colleagues into the movies, starring in the forthcoming Idlewild.  Full text...

Hip-hop's clown princes finally go gangsta: 1930s style. Roddy Woomble not involved.  Full text...

Ambitious but flawed, at turns stunning, maddening and confusing, Idlewild is a curate's egg - but the good parts are implausibly delicious.  Full text...

Anyone hoping for the return of the spark that made their great stuff great is, sadly, as big a fool as the kid sitting up nights waiting for his folks to get back together.  Full text...

TimeOut Rating: 6.6

This retro-nuevo soundtrack is, predictably, a bit of a rag-bag: most of its 25 tracks are rubbish skits, clips of movie dialogue and glib jazz pastiches that only dilute the ten or so decent songs.  Full text...

Idlewild is certainly a spectacle, and an occasionally entertaining and enlightening one at that, but it translates into an elaborate diversion when compared to what this duo has done in the past.  Full text...

One word: CLASSIC!!! Andre does seem a bit distracted, but he gets off the hook for having a short time to complete each song. Big Boi does the expected and brings some of his friends and artists into the spotlight on tracks such as N2U and the popular, marching band-esque Morris Brown.
Overall, the album is pretty good, not their best, but still easy on the ears!

The movie was a big hit and now this album is also a big hit. Big Boi and Andre keep your head up and don't stop what your doing. Hollywood Divorce, The Greatest Show On Earth, and Multron Angel were the top tracks for me

AMAZING! WONDERFUL!! PHENOMENAL!!! I LOVED the album and the movie!! OUTKAST til the end of the afterlife. I don't have a favorite song from the album. I HAVE FAVORITE SONGS: ALL OF THEM. THE SKITS, TOO. Andre' 3000 and Big Boi are both very talented actors. The movie in itself show that they have good musical skills and an even better imagination. LOVED EVERY MINUTE!! FROM START TO FINSH!!

I agree that cirtain tracks were just unesissary. Like filler that didnt have to be there.
some of the the better ones were brilliant they really shine on those particular songs, and i admire that they always seporate themselves from mainstream hip-hop and give us some thing fresh

Idlewild is an incredbile creative often confusing journey with music favorite hip-hop duo dujour Outkast. Even though there are quite a few fillers on this album, the tracks of actual music are brilliant. One of the best qualities about Outkast, and probably one of the worst things, is their indvidual characteristics. On previous albums..two styles were obiviously present. Two different sounds. One for the streets and One for the soul. But what made it work was the seemingly effortless way the two came together. A seamless blend of true musical genius.

However on Idlewild those two sounds are apparent and disjointed. The duo rap together on only two songs on this album. It makes true outkast fans yearn for the days of the slick exchanges on Atliens and SouthenPlaya.

But there is great music on this album. Highlight tracks to check out include:

"Might O" - Big and Dre back together...no matter how separate they seem.

"Morris Brown" - Probably the album's best and strongest track. People have slept on Big Boi's lyrical genius but this is the track where he truly shines.

"Life is Like a Musical" - Pay close attention to the lyrics on this track very telling about the Outkast mindset.

Overall, I could never and will never dislike anything Outkast does. They have proven themselves to be true musical talents. Lyrically and musically Outkast has got it all.
