Pearl Jam is another straight-up collection of raw, blistered rock and moody mid-tempo balladry. The difference here, and the reason for excitement, is that the self-titled record more consistently achieves the grandeur, rage, and beauty they’ve always pursued, throughout its entirety.

By not overextending or aspiring to be anything more than a rock ' n' roll pure-play, Pearl Jam has created something that will resonate far deeper.

This eponymous disc aims to fix that by turning up the guitars, trimming away the fat, and getting that old warhorse Eddie Vedder actually sing rather than groan. Songs like "World Wide Suicide" and "Severed Head" even come close to recreating the hard rock thrills of the band's billion-selling debut, Ten.

They sound like a band successfully raging against the dying of their own relevance...as well as, you know, the machine.

The band's second and third albums, 1993's bluntly titled Vs. and 1994's Vitalogy, are as good as modern rock-in-opposition gets: shotgun guitars, incendiary bass and drums, and Eddie Vedder's scalded-dog howl, all discharged in backs-to-the-wall fury and union. This album, Pearl Jam's first studio release in four years and their best in ten, is more of that top electric combat.

They rage against George Bush, the Iraq war and American apathy while guitarists Stone Gossard and Mike McCready serve up aggressive rock solo after solo.

Instead of trying to rage against the machine, they're appealing to its intellectual nature.

album is great but not pearl jam great. It is good album, but in compair with all other pearl jam albums(without riot act) is its music just like flushed in the back. And it is overshadowed by other albums P.S I was in Zagreb to and it was great. The end with McCready solo on Yellow Led better was the best stuf in my hole life!!! |

Simply put, their best work since Ten. The whole CD could play over and over for days and it would not bother me one bit! I'll put Severed Hand up against any rock song that came out last year. Great guitar work and smooth vocals! |

This album will/should stand up against any album put out in the last 10 years and the next. An abosolute masterpiece, even if i disagree with his anti-bush/war message and ramblings, this album is an 11 |

Great album, they came back with a new sound who sounds like the one in the early years, I would have given 10, but I don't like Comatose, all the other ones are fantastic |

Every song from this album is a hit,but it sounds kind of dark sometimes, and Eddie's voice is gotten worse, and I'm sad because of that. Still THEY ARE MY FAVORITE BAND. I LOVE THEM!!!!!! PEARL JAM FOREVER!!!!!! |
