They describe their music as resembling "a fever-induced gypsy dream that you have after drinking too much red wine while listening to a cabaret singer in a Southern speakeasy that is run by witches", but essentially they're combining the swing-band vocal group style of Manhattan Transfer with a modern alt.folk sensibility that incorporates glockenspiel, zither, strings and dulcimer.

Though Thirteen Tales is a little heavy on slo-mo beauty, there's a lot to like, including the very catchy "Turn on Billie" and "Go to Heaven," which is both lovely and horny.

The Pierces' third LP is more macabre than Kate Bush walking through a haunted forest holding hands with The Horrors. The carnivalesque 'Secret' has the rhythm of a deserted carousel, and 'Sticks And Stones' is best described as a gothic Long Blondes, conjuring images of Kate Jackson at the helm of a seedy, smokey French brothel - definitely no bad thing.
