White and Brendan Benson's collaboration, completed by the Greenhornes' crack rhythm section, is perfect.

Sounds like they had as much fun making it as you're going to have listening to it.

Jack White has seemed frustrated with the constraints of The White Stripes for a while now. About an album and a half, if we're keeping score. If The Nurse, the marimba, and Get Behind Me, Satan told us anything, it was that Jack had grown tired of red, white and black, what he really wanted now was a nice pair of tartan slacks.

'Broken Boy Soldier's is never going to satisfy anyone looking for a reinvention of the wheels of the lumbering cart of rock & roll, but there's no denying it puts a sheen to the rim, gives a pleasingly smooth ride, and adds some of those nifty luminous sliding things to the spokes.

An off-the-cuff collaboration between two friends and one which, despite its imperfections, is an effort worthy of applause.

White Stripes fans will have no reason not to love Broken Boy Soldiers—they may just love it a bit less than White's steadier gig.

It may be refreshing like an ice-cold soda to see White toe-dipping into new territory, but making the switch from black and white (and red) to living color is thrilling only in the relative sense.

Consider it a lazily scrawled postcard from a friend on sabbatical, and hope he comes back soon.

White Stripes mixed with a bass guitar, more electric guitars, and a real drummer. Oh, and more consistency.

They're best when the results most closely recall The White Stripes, as on the heavy blues-rock of "Level" and especially "Broken Boy Soldier" itself.

Broken Boy Soldiers is proof that the Raconteurs are offering themselves as a tighter garage pop outfit that will be worth scraping together £15 to go see them play live.

The song that started it all is “Steady As She Goes”. It kicks off Broken Boy Soldiers, and it’s surely the garage rock anthem of the year: the year’s “C’mon C’mon” or “Seven Nation Army”, with a chorus that explodes out of the fabric of the song, and a fuller sound that helps fill out White’s reedy voice.

Nothing is really very exciting here, or very interesting, and this leaves half-brained questions of aesthetic choice and lazy nostalgia.

This CD is great. "Together" and "Blue Veins" are my favorite on the whole CD. Jack White has truely stepped it up. |

Awesome effort. It wont come out of my car CD player, well, at least I haven't tried! Intimate Secretary is very Beatle-esque. |

I don't think I could have asked for a better birthday present! "Broken Boy Soldiers" is the little cherry atop my Jack White cupcake!
The only reason this isn't getting a '10' is because I wish it lasted longer than half an hour! |
