In 2004, Snoop Dogg scored his biggest hit in the post riding shotgun with Dr. Dre years with The Neptunes-assisted "Drop it Like it's Hot". But while R&G was aimed at the charts with Southern and East Coast-seasoned production, Snoop's Tha Blue Carpet Treatment (Doggystyle/Geffen) uses production from in and out of California, culminating in an album that lyrically spotlights the West Coast sound, style, and legacy. While The Game is turning heads and churning charts with an energetic flow and hard-nosed lyrics, Snoop faithfully follows his script of laid back drawl and pimpish charm, a gift and a curse.

What the album actually does is present a calming looseness-- nothing shocking or obscure, and better for it. Pop it in and clean your bathroom. Or go for a run. Or bring it to a party. Or the strip club.

Snoop's eighth LP doesn't do much to break the trend. The production is pretty hot, with high-def beats that range from tricked-out funk (Dr. Dre's "Boss's Life") to dark, tense bounce (the excellent Neptunes-produced "Vato").

Tha Blue Carpet Treatment, for all its faults, isn’t really an awful album—it’s more a matter of the idea that when you’re given a daunting 78 minutes of media (and no skits, which is awesome), it’s easy to find a whole pile of problems.

One of Snoop's best albums in a while. A mix of thoughtful moving tracks like Imagine & Conversations paired up with the catchy beats of Which One of You & Boss's Life seems to have really payed off, producing a great album. Although Snoop seems to have fallen even deeper down the P Diddy track of having more featured artists that tracks, they're all put to good use. |

Snoop Dogg's best song on this albulm is actually his hit single "vato". Like many good old rappers, Snoop aint got that flow he had when he first came out. Im not gonna dog him because Snoop overcame ALOT of challenges coming up as an O.G. in the west, while being on the Death Row label years ago. After listening to each song twice, it was a little life draining to waste my time with this guy, and my cash. Ya Dig? |
