If this undeniably talented band are to repay that initial excitement, their fourth album is going to have to offer a great deal more consistency and invention than on display here.

The Strokes are, and have always been, a band that looks great at arm's length - and consequently, 'First Impressions Of Earth' remains, in the best way, untouchable: the first - indeed, maybe the last - word in New York City cool.

Since the loss of their musical virginity, The Strokes have repeated their catchy, 3 minute punk rock formula, varying it only slightly to keep us engaged/purchasing.

The Strokes are still the saviours of rock and still sound as exciting as they did in 2001.

Still, from the band we never expected to evolve, there is enough sweeping ambition to have knocked us on our heels - if only the members had learned the art of discretion.

Their trademark trebly sound, meanwhile, has been beefed up into something more closely akin to a Clear Channel programmer's idea of alternative rock.

It's difficult to listen to the album without coming away with the impression that it should really be two different records.

Leaping from the speakers in a fury of jarring axe steel, clocking rhythmic beats and clinical vocal swagger, ultimately this LP gives itself - at some 60 minutes length - an awful lot of time to say very little.

Cast away the politics and the last twenty minutes and you'll still be left with two or three top tunes to add to your daily playlists, but it was never going to be ground-breaking or innovative.

So one can hardly blame them for cutting their losses and going for broke on their boorishly titled third album, First Impressions of Earth.

Anonther example of expert songmanship here, every song could be a single, a more mainstream record than the previous two but fantastic nonetheless. |

"First Impressions of Earth" has a hidden agenda, an album with the ability to change with the times. This album can therefore be heaqrd forver in the Newyor Rock Scene. Catchy punk sounds will allways be catchy - yet this album is mainstream re-thinking |

I love this albumn. It's something that you can jump to in a car and enjoy the nightlife with. It's very catchy, I do agree on that. It does have mainstream thinking, but it's still good nonetheless. Good job, guys. |

After the 1st 2 songs, which are all right, you'll be struggling to find any really quality tracks. Ultimately, another album that has failed to live up the brilliance of "Is this it?" |

They are the best. Lirics are perfect. Casablancas is a genius! |

This is one of the greatest albums ever made. Every song on it is definatly perfect. Some may say that '15 minutes' is terrible, because Julian sounds drunk and that he actually isnt feeling the music, but i strongly disagree with that. Unlike many of the reveiwers above, i think that The Strokes are evolving into bigger and better music song by song. They got it right with 'Is This It' and they got it right again and by listening to all there songs, i am proud to say that i know the next album will also be a hit. What cant Casablancas do.

The Strokes have gone for a "new sound." This album is no where near as good as is this it or the grossly underrated Room on Fire. Nevertheless this is a great album even though it is lacking in solidarity. Just hope they go back to their original formula for number four. |

Though there are only four or five really good tracks, they are really good tracks. With the proper sound portraid in their best track yet, "You Only Live Once," this album deserves a ten, this song alone earns the whole album a ten. |
