It’s big, high energy, super-clean, sunny day empowerment-power-pop.

Their sound is new wave all grown-up; they are The Cure on U2, The Police if they'd stayed together, Joy Division if they still had their joy.

They are energetic, exciting, truly talented musicians and song-writers who are not to be trifled with. I look forward to seeing, in years to come, what this impressive group can do.

To their credit, this group of 19-21 year olds has put together a mature, well-crafted collection of songs. To their detriment, one song rolls on to the next with few surprises.

Although it makes for decent enough listening, The Burning Hour offers little in its sonic homage to the ‘80s that hasn’t already been done better by others; it’s the work of a band that’s inevitably gonna be stuck suffering the slings and arrows of critics calling them the poor man’s Killers, which means that the big test of Test Your Reflex’s mettle will come with how they react to those accusations.

Test Your Reflex is energetic and uplifting, yet can still play-off a good revenge song here and there. They touch into the goods and bads of life with an overly excited tune and somewhat symbolic lyrics with motifs implanted periodically. Of the newer bands, it's the Killers meets the Bravery, sticking to that general new-wave sound. I can't wait to hear what they've got coming. |
