His third album and major-label debut, stretches this sea of sound even further, ebbing and flowing from ethereal opener 'Never Be The Same', to the folky strum of 'For Good'. The standout, however, is the downright scary 'Medusa', which, with its layers of discordant guitars and burned-out bleeps sounds, thrillingly, like some long-lost collaboration between Kevin Shields and Kraftwerk.

This more-is-more aesthetic is best revealed on "Shine," a slowly drifting iceberg of a song that nearly overwhelms the listener with waves of synthesizers and chiming guitars, while whispery vocals float in like lingering spirits of long-forgotten 4AD releases.

Ulrich Schnauss, known for his ambient electronic musical creations, has returned with his third full-length disc that springs a few more vocals into his tracks, alongside numerous guitar riffs, for something a little more up-tempo than some of his previous sounds. Schnauss has built something of a reputation for having such a small oeuvre, and Goodbye proves why.

After listening to Goodbye, Isolated Place sounds better than ever before—it’s consistently beautiful, and not as indebted to memories of the early ‘90s as you might think. In contrast, Goodbye contains both the best and the worst of Schnauss’ output until now—with the help of a skip-button, it can only aid an enthusiastic appreciation for Schnauss’ considerable talents.

Schnauss sounds like a cross between Chapterhouse, My Bloody Valentine circa Soon, the Cocteau Twins and Enya, chugging along on barely audible Balearic beats.

Schnauss is a master of putting unlikely pieces together to make a charming whole, but, in the end, they still seem like disparate pieces carefully pushed up next to each other rather than a seamless whole.

Goodbye, Schnauss' third record, follows two discs that wanted terribly much to be breakthroughs, 2001's Far Away Trains Passing By and 2003's A Strangely Isolated Place-- each a perfectly pleasant album that ultimately felt a few years too late.
