After a few listens to Nux Vomica, the band's second full-length, it's quickly apparent that The Veils won't soon be heading down the spiral path of Julian Lennon. In fact it is a shame the father figure angle is given any attention other than a footnote, because Andrews and company have created one of the most exciting and substantial records so far this year.

Much of Nux Vomica sounds like Waterboy Mike Scott backed by the Bad Seeds, with rapidly changing musical moods.

Nux Vomica is a dramatic and powerful statement about uncertain futures, strong-felt regrets, and occasional, barely concealed joy. The stuff of life.

Nux Vomica retains its predecessor's flair for the grandiose, but repositions the Veils as purveyors of a gothic Americana, inhabiting desert-stormy vistas that are just expansive enough to house the band's most valuable asset: Andrews' magnetic, outsize persona.

He's at that age where, if you have enough juice, you can make just about anything you want all yours. He moved half a world away just to start over. And he carries Nux Vomica across as if that half of the world could simply vanish, for nothing would change his mood.

Nux Vomica, on whose cover one finds either Andrews or Boy George, is an interesting, good album: more inventive, heavy, meaningful, and memorable than the Veils’ first.

Close to perfect. This album is so far off the mainstream radar, and yet there's no reason it should be. Nux Vomica is a powerfully felt, powerfully delivered work of passion that understands the dynamics of light and shades and uses them to create an album of depth and surprises that will reward the time you put into it. My find of 2007 so far (OK - so I missed it last year!!!) |
